Are We Actually Getting a 2022 Toyota Land Cruiser After All?
The 2022 Toyota Land Cruiser 300 series shows itself in the following YouTube video with some super raw spy shots. It’s a completely new Land Cruiser model and we have questions. Are we actually getting a redesigned Toyota Land Cruiser after all? Will it still have a V8?
Thanks to another intriguing video from Kirk Kreifels, we almost get a glance of the redesigned Toyota Land Cruiser. If you were on the edge of your seat hoping for a 2022 Toyota Land Cruiser 300 series, you’ll be stoked to find out that a new Land Cruiser model is coming. But it’s reserved for global markets and we won’t be seeing one in the U.S. anytime soon. Womp womp.
That doesn’t mean never, though, right? Just because we aren’t getting one in 2021 or 2022 doesn’t mean the redesigned Land Cruiser won’t ever grace the North American market. So what do we know about this upcoming 300 series Land Cruiser?
Is the Land Cruiser Discontinued?
For now, the Toyota Land Cruiser is discontinued in North America after 2021. Set to debut to the global market in Japan in April, we will have to content ourselves with wistfully viewing photos and videos of the 2022 Toyota Land Cruiser 300 series from afar. We’ll have to wait for that next long-awaited trip abroad to taste the forbidden fruit.
If you’re a Land Cruiser fan, rest assured they last a seriously long time. So, while there won’t be any new outgoing models for us in the next couple of years, you’ll still be able to find them used. But let’s get to the meat of the story. What is the new Land Cruiser model going to be like?
The 2022 Toyota Land Cruiser 300 series
The 200 series Land Cruiser has been in production from the 2008 model year until the present. We’ve seen various upgrades and redesigns. However, as we expect from a Toyota truck or SUV––especially one this beloved, it’s been relatively the same since it entered the market over a decade ago.
The 2022 Toyota Land Cruiser 300 series is a much-awaited new model. While we know we aren’t going to see it in the states yet, it’s still fun to fantasize. For some, the thought of an $85,000 SUV that often receives comments from critics about its dated tech isn’t ideal. On the other hand, many––you know who you are––have a special place in their hearts for the Land Cruiser.
“The full model change will bring completely new powertrains and all-wheel drive systems, with the new off-roader expected to be underpinned by Toyota’s latest TNGA platform.”

So it’s no wonder that the new Land Cruiser model is met with so much excitement. Especially in global markets, this is a staple SUV. It’s capable of covering treacherous terrain and its simple design has long been a testament to its insane longevity. Will the redesigned Toyota Land Cruiser uphold tradition? What’s new? A hybrid? New tech? The answers to our questions are set to be revealed in just a few short months.
Will the new model have a V8?
The redesigned Toyota Land Cruiser might actually get a V8 engine. But we are pretty doubtful. Even cooler, it could get a plug-in hybrid V8 powertrain good for about 700 horsepower. With power and innovation like that, it wouldn’t be a total shock to see this rugged SUV make its way to US soil.
Who doesn’t want a ridiculously reliable off-road SUV with a third row that rivals the 2021 Ram 1500 TRX in brute strength? As Toyota plans to round out their lineup with a fully hybridized array of models in the near future, it’s not completely crazy to think something like this might be possible.
That said, we are actually more likely to see something like a turbo V6. Larger displacement engines are going out of style amongst manufacturers as regulations tighten. In order to propel this ancient Toyota SUV into the future, a hybrid model would be cool. Either way, we expect to see a similar yet modernized rugged exterior for the 2022 Toyota Land Cruiser 300 series paired with a high-quality interior. In fact, we can’t wait to see what it looks like and what options Toyota reveals––even if it isn’t going to be available here in the states.
