Armored Truck Rains Money on California Highway: Chaos Ensues as Drivers Scurry to Collect the Cash
Have you ever had a “Scrooge McDuck” moment in which you dreamed that you could fall on a big pile of money? Last Friday on a California highway, surprised drivers came close to this experience. An armored Brinks truck got into a minor accident and then rained money all over the place. Afterward, chaos ensued, in which drivers on the highway stopped their cars and scurried to collect the cash.
Bags of money burst open after armored Brinks truck accident
On Friday at around 9:00 a.m., people started reporting to authorities that money was scattered on Interstate 5 in Carlsbad, California, as detailed by CBS 8 San Diego. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), an armored Brinks truck was in a minor accident. The accident caused the doors of the armored truck to open, and then bags of money fell out and then burst open on the freeway. Initially, the cash was scattered on the northbound lanes but then drifted to the southbound lanes as well.
Drivers on the highway: Let’s stop and scoop up the money for ourselves!
The armored truck accident and scattered cash caused a major traffic jam, as drivers stopped their cars on the highway. The Brinks truck driver attempted to collect the cash and return it to the truck. However, many other drivers got out of their cars and scooped up the cash for themselves. In response, the Brinks truck driver recorded the illegal acts of people stealing the money.
It seems that when faced with the choice of either helping the armored truck driver or getting some easy money, many drivers choose the latter. Reality never set in as drivers, enchanted by the rainfall of money on the freeway, frantically grabbed the cash. Some of the drivers even posted their illegal theft of money on social media.
CHP: Made arrests of drivers that stole the money but are looking for other perpetrators
The CHP and FBI are working together on an investigation in an attempt to get the stolen money and apprehend any of the perpetrators. In a news conference, CHP Sgt. Curtis Martin stated, “If you found money on the freeway, it is not your money. It belongs to the FDIC (Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation) and this armored truck and the bank. It needs to be returned.”
Martin also added that the CHP couldn’t guarantee that the perpetrators would not face criminal punishment if they returned the money. He continued, “If anyone picked up cash, please bring it to the CHP office in Vista, and we will go from there.”
According to the CHP, two people, a man and a woman, were arrested for stealing the money. The couple also blocked traffic after they stopped their car in the middle of the freeway and scurried to grab the cash. Also, the CHP and the FBI are utilizing the videos on social media that could serve as evidence in their efforts to apprehend any other perpetrators.
