At ‘KenTRUCKy’ Day, Ford Launches New F-250 Super Duty Truck, Bigger Diesel
Ford announced a new Super Duty pickup today at a special announcement at Churchill Downs in Kentucky after a massive leadup with the state to rename Sept. 27 “KenTRUCKy Day.” The new Super Duty trucks, or new Ford F-250 and F-350, are Ford’s heavy haulers, and Ford promises a new more powerful diesel engine, a Tremor off-road version, 5G connectivity, and Pro Power Onboard. What else is on the way for the new Super Duty?
The new 2023 Super Duty should be available in the first part of 2023.
What is ‘KenTrucky Day?’
Many press reveals are held during the work day when automotive journalists (ahem) are at their desks. But, Ford’s reveal for the new Super Duty was held a 7:15 eastern time, when many people who would be in the market for a Ford truck could actually watch. The announcement was made on Ford’s YouTube channel.
You may have seen the reports about 45,000 F-150s piling up at Kentucky Speedway. This announcement had nothing to do with that. Sept. 27, 2022, was officially named “KenTRUCKy Day” by Kentucky’s governor, where the company employs 12,000 people and announced new jobs.
The new Ford Super Duty
Ford CEO Jim Farley announced the new truck and said that it’s the first truck with 5G capability, and it has Pro Power Onboard, which provides electric power from its hybrid motor. The new truck has 2 kW of electric power. It has new onboard scales, as well as new box steps in the bed, and active cameras. The new seats, too, can fold almost completely flat. Its new tailgate is automatic, and it has two cameras, alone on top of 12 others on the rest of the truck.
The new truck gets a heads-up display, too, to show speed and other vital info. But, when you’re in off-road mode. The new Pro Trailer Hitch Assist will automatically back the truck up to a trailer. It then uses the onboard scales to measure tongue weight so you’re trailer is balanced.
Ford promises a new, even more powerful, diesel engine in F-250 Super Duty
Ford’s 7.3-liter gas-powered engine is back Power Stroke is back with 1,050 lb.-ft of torque.
But, what if you need even more power? The new truck has a new diesel that is even more powerful. But, Ford executives kept that new engine’s details under wraps.
The engines in the 2023 truck include:
- New standard 6.8-liter V8 gas engine, targeting more low-end torque to make starting on steep grades and merging onto highways easier
- 7.3-liter V8 that is targeting the best gas horsepower and torque in the class thanks to improved air intake and tuning
- A 6.7-liter Power Stroke V8 diesel that can go longer intervals between oil changes to stay on the job longer
- New high-output 6.7-liter Power Stroke V8 diesel with a unique turbo, upgraded exhaust manifolds and unique tuning targeting the best horsepower and torque in the class
What is a Ford’s new F-250 Super Duty truck?
The Super Duty trucks carry the heavy stuff. While the F-150 is the truck most of us see on the road, or even use, the Super Duty trucks are the ones that you see at job sites towing massive trailers and hauling huge amounts of stuff and start at $45,000. These things can tow up to 37,000 pounds with a gooseneck trailer and up to 7,850 pounds in the bed. Super Duty trucks are not upgraded consumer trucks but purpose-built work trucks on their own frame that can be basic or luxurious. The trucks are so popular that Ford essentially sold out of 2022s.
The Super Duty line launched in 1999
Ford created the Super Duty line in 1999 and they have gone through four generations. The current generation launched in 2017 and was the first all-new version of the truck since 1999. Like the F-150, the Super Duty got an aluminum frame that saved hundreds of pounds weight, which not only helped the trucks get better fuel economy but allowed them to tow and haul more. For 2022, you can order it with a 6.2-liter V8 that has 385 horsepower, a 7.3-liter with 475 horsepower, or the 6.7-liter Power Stroke V8 diesel that makes an astounding 1,050 lb.-ft of torque and 475 horsepower.
