According to recently-released information from automaker Audi, there will be one less convertible car to choose from when next year rolls around, as they get ready to cut away the A3 Cabriolet from its vehicle lineup. This year may be the last year you’ll see a new Audi A3 Cabriolet on the road.

Audi decides to give the A3 convertible the ax

Audi convertible fans will now have fewer options to choose from, as Audi makes the decision to cut its convertible variant of the A3 from its vehicle lineup. According to Car and Driver, this announcement is coming at peak convertible season, allowing fans a last chance at owning the 2019 A3 Cabriolet before the model disappears forever. While the A3 sedan variant will still be available for the 2020 model year, Audi has decided that the 2019 A3 Cabriolet, in all its glory, will be no more. Fans of the small and dart-like A3 Cabriolet will still have options for an Audi convertible with the A5, S5, TT Roadster, and R8 Spyder variants.

Why Audi is making the decision to move on from the A3 Cabriolet

The Audi A3 Cabriolet is a quick, luxurious car, but it never sold in serious volumes for the automaker. This is no surprise, as convertible sales across the board are dwindling as the result of more buyers turning towards crossovers and SUVs. And when compared to other comparable models in its own lineup, the convertible A3 falls short. Customers seem to prefer the A5 Cabriolet over the A3, finding more bang for their buck.

According to CarScoops, the A3 Cabriolet has always been slow-selling and back in 2016, Audi was already beginning to push for its discontinuation. Only 19,400 A3 Cabriolets were sold in 2015, making it the least popular A3 variant for years running. According to Autoblog, a downward trend can be seen across the entire A3 line in recent years, selling 36,000 vehicles in 2015 and only 18,000 in 2018.

A brief look at the A3 Cabriolet before it’s gone for good

Audi is known for its luxurious, high-quality vehicles. Their sedans and performance vehicles have been especially loved the world over. The A3 Cabriolet came onto the lineup as a small, fun, and quick car, known for its sporty performance and high-end features. As a four-seater, it’s more designed for speed and luxury than comfort and cargo. The 2019 A3 Cabriolet is available in three trim levels, with starting prices of $38,900, $41,700, and $49,900, respectively.

According to Jalopnik, the A3 Cabriolet is Audi’s entry-level convertible, almost $10,000 less than its TT Roadster convertible. But even though it is the cheapest of Audi’s convertible options, many find its price to be unnecessary given what you get with the A3 convertible.

With those three trim levels comes two powertrain options. According to MSN, the 2019 A3 Cabriolet comes standard with a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine that puts out 184 hp and 22 lb-ft of torque, with front-wheel drive and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The upgraded variant of the A3 Cabriolet boosts the horsepower up to 228 with 258 lb-ft of torque, with all-wheel drive and a six-speed automatic transmission.

Though this isn’t the news Audi convertible fans wanted to hear this summer, there’s still a chance you can get your hands on a 2019 A3 Cabriolet before they become a thing of the past.
