Subaru Australia has confirmed the availability of a square-back 2022 Subaru WRX. The vehicle will not be coming to the United States right now, or possibly ever. If you’re in need of one of these new wagons, you’ll have to travel over to the down under to get your hands on one. According to CarScoops, the Sportwagon version of the beloved WRX is much different than the standard WRX. The vehicle changes a lot from the standard version, and it’s not just some extra space in the back.

What’s different about the 2022 WRX Sportwagon?

More than just cargo space changes when you go from the WRX sedan to the Sportwagon. This five-door WRX ditches the sedan’s black plastic wheel arch cladding and rear bumper. That’s good news to some because the rear bumper on WRX sedans has become a topic to spark controversy among fans. The styling of the WRX Sportwagon takes away from the high-profile look you’d expect from the WRX name. Drivers of the Sportwagon won’t draw quite as much attention.

The Sportwagon is visually identical to the Levorg STi that is sold in Japan. It has 18-inch wheels that don’t really do anything special. They look plain and are rather small. The hood features a very noticeable scoop, a pair of large tailpipes can be seen from the rear, and a tailgate spoiler is also present. The more of these features there are, the less under-the-radar the WRX Sportwagon will be. The five-door model also shares an engine with the WRX sedan. A 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine should allow the Sportwagon to move just as quickly as the WRX sedan.

How fast is the Sportwagon?

Though the official numbers have not yet become available from Subaru Australia, they are expected to be very similar to the US sedan versions. The American WRX sedan is capable of producing 271-horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. The Australian Sportwagon will likely be slightly less powerful, but nearly identical. A negative for most WRX fanatics is that the Sportwagon will not be available with a manual transmission.

In the US market as well as other parts of the world, the WRX sedan can be purchased with Subaru’s CVT automatic or six-speed manual. The Sportwagon in Australia will only be available with the CVT. Regardless, all-wheel drive will be standard in all Subaru WRX variants.

What kind of features does the 2022 Subaru WRX have?

The Sportwagon interior features and technology are basically the same exact thing as the sedan version. This includes things like the EyeSight driver assistance package. Also standard are LED steering responsive headlights, LED fog lights, under spoilers, heated side mirrors, power tilt/sliding moonroof, performance-design heated front seats, leather-wrapped interior accessories, and so much more.

More importantly, the vehicle includes a ton of extras to keep drivers safe. A traction control system, brake assist, rear-vision camera, STARLINK Safety and Security, advanced airbag system, keyless entry, anti-theft security, and even more. All of these features make the Subaru WRX sedan and its new Aussie sibling a very safe option.

According to CarScoops, the Subaru WRX Sportwagon isn’t entering the US, though we think it would do very well in the American market. There’s a fanatical fanbase of America WRX drivers that like going fast, so much so that it is the most ticketed vehicle in America. The Sportwagon variant gives less aggressive and more safe-leaning drivers an option for a great-looking vehicle they love, with added space and security.
