Automatic power windows are one of those simple modern vehicle luxuries we often forget we love. In fact, you might not even notice you have them until they annoyingly stop working. Who wants to pay full attention to a window button while it rolls down or up all the way? Ew! If you’ve noticed your “auto” power window feature isn’t working, try this quick universal reset to get it back in order.

Most modern vehicles have a universal power window reset procedure

If your power windows are fully functioning other than the “auto” feature, then you likely just need a simple reset.

Either turn your ignition so the accessories are on or start your car. Next, roll the window all the way down. When it’s fully down, continue to hold the button for several seconds. Some cars require a 15-second hold, while others need only five-ish seconds. Then, roll the window up manually. When it’s all the way up, maintain the “hold” position for five to 15 seconds.

That should do it!

If your windows are misbehaving in other ways, too, this reset procedure might not work. For instance, if your window is slow to roll down, stops halfway, or seems to jam into the door or window frame, there’s an underlying issue at play.

Power window components that commonly turn faulty include:

  • Window switch
  • Window motor
  • Window regulator
  • Pigtail connector or other wiring issue

Visit a trusted mechanic with power window issues if you’re experiencing any symptoms outside an inoperable “auto” feature.
