Chevrolet produces several models in the crowded small SUV segment, including the Trax, Equinox, Blazer, and Bolt EUV. But if you’re interested in a 2023 Chevy Trailblazer subcompact crossover, you might want to wait or look elsewhere for a good deal. Here’s why.

What vehicles are selling well above MSRP?

With inflation and auto industry shortages, new vehicles are selling for more than their manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP), especially popular cars, trucks, and SUVs. Consumers desperate to buy a specific vehicle will likely pay more to ensure they get one. Vehicles selling for way above their MSRP include several Kia and Hyundai models. 

According to Consumer Reports, one of the worst models to buy right now is the 2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid, which is selling for 20% over MSRP. Buyers wanting this SUV, especially an all-wheel-drive plug-in hybrid version, will likely pay about $7,680 more for a new model. Following it is the Kia Carnival minivan, selling for 20% over MSRP. If you purchase one now, you could pay around $9,000 more than the sticker price. 

In addition, buyers are paying 18% over MSRP for a new Nissan Versa. That equates to about $2,800 more. The brand also has the Leaf, an electric model in demand due to high gas prices. Consumer Reports says the Leaf has recently sold for 15% more than its MSRP. That means you could pay about $4,200 more for the vehicle. 

Also, the 2023 Chevy Trailblazer is selling for 14% over the MSRP. That’s not as bad as most other models on CR’s list. But it’s still too high. 

What does the 2023 Chevy Trailblazer offer for the price?

The standard 2023 Chevy Trailblazer has a 1.2-liter turbocharged Inline-three engine producing 137 hp and 162 lb-ft of torque. It pairs with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). Fuel economy for the base model is about 29 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway. Higher trim levels have a 1.3-liter Ecotec turbo producing 155 hp and 174 lb-ft of torque, according to Chevrolet. 

Other features include a digital compass, 17-inch aluminum wheels on the base model, and 18-inch black aluminum wheels on the top-tier RS. Also, expect a six-speaker audio system, remote start, heated mirrors, LED fog lamps, LED taillights, sport terrain tires, and dual-outlet exhaust with round polished tips. Those features are spread out among the four trim levels, so some are specific to a model. 

In addition, the 2023 Trailblazer offers Chevrolet’s suite of safety and advanced driver-assistance features. They include automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, front pedestrian braking, forward collision warning, and lane-keeping assist. 

2023 Chevy Trailblazer alternatives if you want a better deal on a small SUV

If you don’t want to overpay for a new small SUV, consider a few 2023 Chevy Trailblazer alternatives. First, there’s the Mazda CX-30 subcompact crossover, starting at $22,500. You might wonder whether that price means cheap features, but that isn’t so with the CX-30. Although it saves some money with inexpensive materials scattered throughout, it still offers high-quality LED headlights, automatic high beams, and a traction control system. 

Another Trailblazer alternative is the Honda HR-V. This subcompact SUV has had past safety issues and an underwhelming powertrain. But Honda gave the 2023 model year much-needed improvements. Now, it sports a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 158 hp, getting 26 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway. It also has a push-button start, cruise control, and one-touch turn signal indicators.

The 2023 Trailblazer is a competitive Chevy SUV, but thanks to its popularity, it’s selling for more than its MSRP. If overpaying isn’t in your budget, consider the Mazda CX-30 or Honda HR-V.
