Car and Driver reports that when compared to its rivals, this year’s model “fails to deliver a luxury experience” too. And to make matters worse? According to Consumer Reports, this year’s model earned a frustratingly average reliability rating. Fortunately, there are alternatives to the Ford Expedition worth considering.

The Toyota Sequoia is a reliable alternative to the Ford Expedition

If you’re a stickler for reliability, odds are you’re going to want to steer clear of the Ford Expedition. According to Consumer Reports, this year’s model earned itself a three out of five predicted reliability rating. In the grand scheme of things, that rating isn’t all that terrible but still falls into that average category. On the other hand, the Toyota Sequoia earned a four out of five predicted reliability rating from Consumer Reports.

That’s not the only reason to consider the Toyota Sequoia as an alternative to the Ford Expedition either. According to Kelley Blue Book, this year’s Sequoia can tow slightly more than the Ford Expedition can. Kelley Blue Book added that the Sequoia boasts a better resale value than the Expedition. 

In fact, CarEdge reports that while the Sequoia will depreciate 49% after five years and have a five-year resale value of $32,227, the Expedition will depreciate 58% after five years and have a five-year resale value of $26,841.

Choose the Chevy Tahoe if you want to pick what’s under the hood

Here’s the thing, the Ford Expedition is available with one engine and one engine only. In fact, standard across all models is a 3.5-liter V6 EcoBoost engine that’s capable of churning out 375-hp. Opt for the range-topping Platinum trim instead, and the Expedition’s base engine can achieve 400-hp. Unfortunately, your options really end there, because as we said, this year’s Expedition doesn’t offer up many choices when it comes to what’s under the hood.

The good news is that, unlike the Ford Expedition, this year’s new Chevy Tahoe can be had with your pick of engine under the hood. The choices are relatively extensive too. While all models come standard with a 355-hp 5.3-liter V8, this year’s new Tahoe is also available with your choice of a 420-hp 6.2-liter engine or a 3.0-liter six-cylinder diesel engine. For those on the prowl for a diesel-powered alternative to the Ford Expedition, that last engine option will be particularly alluring.

The Lincoln Navigator is a luxurious alternative to the Ford Expedition

Say you aren’t in the market for a spacious family hauler. Instead, maybe it’s a lavishly appointed SUV that you’re after. If that’s the case, Car and Driver reports that the Lincoln Navigator makes for the ideal alternative to the Ford Expedition. Opt for a Black Label version of the Lincoln Navigator, and you’ll find yourself enjoying everything from premium leather seating to premium maintenance service with pickup and delivery, complimentary anytime car washes, and annual detailing.

It’s worth keeping in mind that while the Lincoln Navigator may be a luxurious alternative to the Ford Expedition, it’s also costly. Base models start at $76,185 and really only get more expensive from there. Meaning, if you’re shopping on a budget, the Lincoln Navigator may not be the best alternative to the Ford Expedition for you.
