For some drivers, the Ford Mustang Mach-E could potentially be the perfect car. This all-electric Mustang is the best choice for the environmentally conscious shopper who still wants the quickness of a sports car. However, according to MotorTrend, there is one kind of person who might not like the Ford Mustang Mach-E.

In the back seat of the Ford Mustang Mach-E

Several sports cars on the market are notorious for having claustrophobic rear seats, including the gas-operated Ford Mustang. There is one notable exception, that being the Dodge Charger. However, since the Ford Mustang Mach-E is an SUV, MotorTrend’s tallest tester expected to have an easier experience as a driver.

However, they were unpleasantly surprised to find that the Mach-E feels even more cramped than its sports coupe counterpart. In the driver’s seat, their feet fit on the pedals, but they had to keep their knees bent. If it weren’t for the telescoping steering wheel, they might not have been able to fit their legs under it at all.

Since the Ford Mustang Mach-E has four doors, it’s definitely easier to access the second row. However, its sloping roofline didn’t do MotorTrend’s tall tester any favors, made worse by the Mach-E’s sunroof. They said that there was actually more legroom in the back, but they still had to keep their knees bent.

MotorTrend says the Ford Mustang Mach-E’s battery pack is the most likely culprit for its tight dimensions. Like many EVs, it’s installed underneath the car, which pushes the seats higher and reduces total headroom. The Mach-E is available with two battery options, one providing a standard range and a larger one with an extended range.

How many ponies it makes depends on whether you want a rear-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive Mustang Mach-E. Both standard range models make 266 hp, but the AWD standard range has slightly more torque. The extended range versions make 290 hp with RWD and 346 hp with AWD.

Available performance upgrades

The Mach-E wouldn’t be a true Mustang if its lineup didn’t include a few feisty GT models. The Ford Mustang Mach-E GT’s electric powertrain makes 480 hp and 600 lb-ft of torque. According to Ford, it has a 0-60 mph time of just under four seconds.

The Ford Mustang Mach-E GT Performance is slightly faster, with a 0-60 mph time of 3.5 seconds. It makes the same amount of horsepower with 34 more lb-ft of torque, plus several extra racing enhancements. It comes with a set of Pirelli summer tires, Brembo brakes, and magnetorheological dampers.

A fancy interior

The first thing you’ll notice when you sit behind the wheel is the massive 15-inch touchscreen to your right. The infotainment system can make profiles for up to three drivers and remember their preferred audio and climate settings. The synthetic leather seats come with standard heating and ambient cabin lighting is also included.

One area where the regular Mustang can’t match the Mach-E is cargo space. 29 cubic feet of space sits behind the second row, up to 60 cubic feet with the second row folded. You can also store additional items in the frunk under the Mustang Mach-E’s hood.

When will the Ford Mustang Mach-E be released?

The 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E should start to appear on dealership lots by next summer. The base trim retails for $42,895 and the top-of-the-line GT models start at $60,500. The limited First Edition Models are already sold out.

The Ford Mustang Mach-E certainly has great performance specs, but should taller drivers beware? Fortunately, MotorTrend’s tester specified that they’re nearly seven feet tall, so most drivers will fit behind the wheel just fine.
