Barrett-Jackson: 4 of the Most Expensive Cars Ever Sold Were Corvettes
A Barrett-Jackson auction is a great way to observe some of the most prolific car sales on the planet. As a matter of fact, vehicles routinely sell for hundreds of thousands of dollars, sometimes even millions. Here are some of the most expensive cars ever sold at Barrett-Jackson; do you notice a Corvette-related pattern?
- 1966 Shelby Cobra 427 Super Snake- $5,500,000
- Batmobile (Lincoln Futura)- $4,620,000
- 1967 Chevrolet Corvette L88- $3,850,000
- 2023 Chevrolet Corvette Z06- $3,600,000
- 2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray- $3,000,000
- 1969 Chevrolet Corvette No. 57 Rebel – $2,860,000
The 1966 Shelby Cobra 427 Super Snake is genuine automotive royalty
It is appropriate that the 1966 Shelby Cobra 427 Super Snake is the king of this list, considering its brilliant almost-royal blue hue and connection to American motorsport royalty, Carroll Shelby. The Cobra in question was reportedly the last of the Shelby-American-built Cobra Super Snakes. The only thing wilder than the car itself: it sold for over $5,000,000 at auction.
The Lincoln Futura-based Batmobile is one of the most expensive cars ever sold
Batman has driven many Batmobiles and extravagant cars on screen in the tenure of the character, but nothing touches the value of the first Batmobile. The Lincoln Futura-based Batmobile is a memento of TV’s Batman from the 1960s and went for a stratospheric $4,620,000 in a 2013 Barrett-Jackson auction.
1967 Chevrolet Corvette L88 sold for nearly $4 million at a Barret-Jackson auction
One of many Corvettes that have fetched massive amounts of cash at Barrett-Jackson, the 1967 Chevrolet Corvette L88 is an extremely limited-release sports car. Furthermore, the L88 sold at auction in 2014 was one of only 20 that Chevrolet made. As a result of the exclusivity, a bidder had to shell out $3,850,000 to get one.
Two C8 Corvettes set records at Barrett-Jackson auctions
The C8 Chevrolet Corvette changed things for the storied sports car. Before the release of the latest generation, Corvette followed a specific formula: front-engine, rear-drive. However, the C8 took a page out of Zora Arkus-Duntov’s book and changed the mold. Enter the mid-engine production C8 Corvette.
Collectors had to have them, and the VIN 001 example of both the 2020 C8 and the 2023 C8 Z06 sold for insane amounts. The 2020 C8 sold for $3,000,000 and the Z06 went for $3,600,000. Not bad for a couple of blue-collar heroes.
1969 Chevrolet Corvette No. 57 Rebel was built in secret and sold for millions at Barrett-Jackson
GM banned Chevrolet from racing in the 1970s, so the secretive race-fanatics at the Bow Tie decided to make a lightweight variant of the L88 Corvette. The L88 already had race engineering in its blood, so the Corvette was a great choice for the four race car builds. According to Newsweek, the bidder snagged this dramatic red No. 57 Rebel at Barrett-Jackson in 2014 for $2,860,000.
