We’ve scoured the Consumer Reports and JD Power ratings for the best 2022 three-row SUV in each segment. Three-row SUVs are undoubtedly larger and are generally marketed to families for that reason. The SUVs tested fall into these four categories; Large SUV, Midsize SUV, Luxury, and Luxury Large.

Each consumer group road tests and then rates each vehicle in the appropriate category. They also factor in owner comments from questionnaires sent out and determine reliability based on previous years’ models, and owner feedback. The data is then rated, and the top score in each category gets the nod.

In only one case do JD Power and Consumer Reports agree on the best one. The other categories show a wide cross-section of SUV brands. In all cases, the highest-rated SUVs had vastly better numbers than previous models. For the three-row SUVs in all of the segments, take a look below.

Large SUV

JD Power rates the 2022 Cadillac Escalade ($76,295-$79,295) as the best overall three-row SUV. It says owners like the power available to the driver and the voice-assistance features. Owners say they don’t like the interior styling. Consumer Reports rates the Ford Expedition Max ($50,110-$81,815) the best. The Max is the lengthened version of the Expedition. Both use the proven F-150’s separate frame. It is the best the Expedition has scored since Consumer Reports began testing them in 2014.

Midsize SUV

The 2022 Chevy Traverse ($33,700-$53,400) gets the top rating from Consumer Reports. In road tests, it scored high in the Driving Experience and Comfort categories. Unfortunately, it scored low in Predicted Reliability. JD Power, on the other hand, found the 2022 Lexus RX ($45,570-$57,660) the best all-around three-row midsize SUV. It said that owners like the quietness of the cabin, and using the voice assistance and safety systems of the RX. Owners faulted the headlights for effectiveness.

Luxury

JD Power found the best overall three-row luxury SUV for 2022 to be the Lexus GX ($55,625-$65,135). That gives Lexus a one-two win in this and the Midsize SUV categories. Owners like the effectiveness of the headlights, as well as the quiet cabin. They feel that the fuel economy, driving range, and length of time to charge its hybrid system could be improved. The Audi Q7 ($57,500-$62,500) is rated the best by Consumer Reports. For the important part of this segment; the cabin, the Q7 scored high. But its reliability rating was not so good.

Luxury Large

The only segment that both JD Power and Consumer Reports agreed upon is the 2022 BMW X7 ($74,900-$141,300). They both praised the interior for quietness and comfort in driving tests. It also scored high for overall quality and interior space. Both consumer groups complained about using the driver’s assist controls and its tendency to overcorrect when in Lane Keep Assist. Each commented on the robust power from the 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine. At an overall 22 mpg, it scored well in fuel economy, something most in this category can’t claim.
