The Best and Worst Hybrid Truck of 2022 Are Made by the Same Car Brand, According to Consumer Reports
Consumer Reports has once again released the annual survey of the most and least reliable car brands and models for 2022. This year, hybrids reigned supreme, and were a huge favorite amongst owners who participated in the survey. Hybrid trucks were especially popular, and one automaker managed to make the best and the worst trucks of 2022.
It’s difficult to place hybrid trucks in one category
When Consumer Reports revealed the results of the survey, the review site gave three rankings for the car categories. These were hybrid cars, sports cars, and hybrid SUVs. Because of this, finding a place for hybrid trucks is no simple task.
This is complicated even further by the fact that there aren’t as many hybrid trucks on the market. Many automakers have grand plans for one, but it has yet to make it from the design floor to the sales floor. If there was a separate category for them, it would be easier to rank them against each other.
Pickup trucks tend to be the least reliable of all vehicles, and this year was no different. One Ford truck managed to stand out, however.
The Ford Maverick Hybrid was a surprise star
The Ford Maverick Hybrid was new for 2022, and it was a breath of fresh air for the American automaker. It looks tough, and with an MSRP range of $20,995 – $26,860, it’s very affordable. Even better is that it has an overall fuel mileage of 37 MPG, which is phenomenal for a truck.
Consumer Reports didn’t exactly gush over the Ford Maverick Hybrid in its review, but there were plenty of good things to say. For example, the Maverick Hybrid switches to electric power at lower speeds, and can cruise just fine without wasting an ounce of gas.
It can also tow up to 4,000 lbs for those who are considering using it for a work vehicle. There is also an AWD option for those who live in areas with wintry weather.
The Ford Maverick Hybrid does have a few quirks, however. Going slow may save on gas, but it also creates some frustrating vibrations. That was the only major complaint from Consumer Reports, however. Even though the Ford Maverick is known for its loud ride, the hybrid is quieter, so it’s an improvement over the base engine.
The Ford F-150 Hybrid did not live up to the hype
The Ford F-150 is an American favorite, but the hybrid version isn’t that loved. In terms of reliability, it earned the lowest score that Consumer Reports gives. The owner satisfaction score wasn’t much better, as it was merely middling.
There were a few areas that managed to impress, such as plenty of safety tech, and rear seats that are surprisingly comfortable for a truck. In spite of this, there were several areas that brought the Ford F-150 Hybrid down.
The ride and handling were panned as being lackluster. The gas mileage is also nothing to brag about. In spite of being a hybrid, this version of the F-150 still only gets 20 MPG. Given that most people are drawn to hybrids for the fuel savings, this F-150 fell flat.
These hybrid trucks are currently on the market
Ford isn’t the only automaker that has hybrid trucks available that you can buy right now. Toyota has also entered the hybrid race.
According to Kelly Blue Book, there are currently two Toyota hybrid trucks. One is the 2022 Toyota Tundra Double Cab. The other is the Toyota Tundra Hybrid CrewMax.
Both were ranked as some of the best hybrid trucks of 2022. In the coming years, we will doubtless have more hybrids joining this list.
