The best mid-size PHEV SUV is a little surprising
As people shift away from electric vehicles and turn to hybrids instead, PHEV SUVs are getting lost in the mix. However, there are a variety of plug-in hybrid vehicles to enjoy even if the top option comes as a surprise.
The Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe is the best mid-size PHEV SUV
Drum roll, please! According to AutoBlog, the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe is the best mid-size PHEV SUV. I found this to be a little surprising because of its price, plus the Jeep Wrangler 4xe is the most popular PHEV in America.
There aren’t a lot of plug-in hybrid vehicles available. Aside from luxury options, you have the Mazda CX-90 PHEV and the Kia Sorrento PHEV. The Grand Cherokee 4xe outranks them both.
The 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe starts with an MSRP of $60,490. Meanwhile, the Sorento PHEV rings in at $50,290, and the Mazda CX-90 PHEV starts at $49,495. So, you could save $10,000 with a different SUV.
I’ve driven the Grand Cherokee 4xe and enjoyed its turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that’s paired with an electric motor to generate 375 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque. However, the ride is a bit stiff and bumpy.
AutoBlog promotes it as being a solid off-roader that can go off-roading in silence. But do families want to adventure or do they want to save money while being more comfortable?
Anyways, the Grand Cherokee 4xe has an EPA-estimated 26 miles of electric range, 56 MPGe, and 23 mpg combined with gas alone.
The Sorrento PHEV has a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that’s paired with an electric motor and a 13.8-kWh battery pack to generate 261 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. It gets an EPA-estimated 32 miles of electric range, 79 MPGe, and 33 miles combined with gas.
With the CX-90 PHEV, you get a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that’s paired with an electric motor to produce 323 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. It gets an EPA-estimated range of 26 miles, 56 MPGe, and 25 mpg with gas only.
While the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe is luxurious, athletic, and capable, other mid-size PHEV SUV models are more affordable and more efficient.
