This may come across as negative, but it’s simply a take on the psychology of truck owners and automotive critics. For years the Honda Ridgeline has been considered to be the best mid-size truck but now a new top-ranking option is in town.

The best mid-size truck is the 2024 Ford Ranger

The best mid-size truck was the Honda Ridgeline for years, but now the 2024 Ford Ranger has taken its spot, and to be honest, it makes sense.

I’m not here to bash the Honda Ridgeline, I understand why critics love it. But truck shoppers may have been disagreeing with them.

The Ridgeline is often ranked high for having the smoothest ride, quietest interior, tons of backseat space, a long list of standard features, and high scores for comfort.

But some truck drivers don’t think the Ridgeline is a real truck because it has a unibody design instead of a traditional body-on-frame build. It also has all-wheel drive instead of 4×4, which limits suspension travel.

Plus, the Ridgeline can only tow up 5,000 lbs. It has the smallest towing capacity in its class and the Hyundai Santa Cruz is in the class below it but can also tow up to 5,000 lbs.

It’s great that the Ridgeline is a comfortable daily driver with plenty of utility, but it’s often made fun of for its lack of truck abilities.

The 2024 Ford Ranger is the best mid-size truck according to Edmunds. It’s followed by the 2024 Chevrolet Colorado in second place and the Honda Ridgeline came in third.

The 2024 Rangr ranks highly because it has a stout towing and payload capacity that doesn’t impact its performance. It can tow up to 7,500 lbs and carry a payload of up to 1,847 lbs.

Critics enjoy the Rangr for its smooth, composed ride quality, strong engine, off-roading Raptor trim level, and intuitive tech. The Ridgeline has the TrailSport trim level, but it’s primarily cosmetic.

Also, the 2024 Ranger has a standard 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine with 270 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. The Raptor Ranger uses a turbocharged 2.7-liter V6 engine with 405 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque.
