The Lexus GS is a popular sedan in the luxury segment. According to US News and World Report, the third generation Lexus GS “consistently receives perfect reliability scores and safety marks form independent testing agencies.” However, the cost of luxury cars like the 2020 GS can get pretty steep if you buy new. What are the best model years for a Lexus GS?

This is the question you may be asking if you are on the hunt for the perfect used GS. Additionally, you are wondering what years to avoid. Also, which GS model years stand out among the rest and why?

The third generation Lexus GS

In 2013, Lexus released a fully redesigned Lexus GS. The sedan remained smooth and soft with a sporty handle. It also kept the plush luxury interior that is expected from a sedan in its class. US News and World Report placed this Lexus model among its list of best used Lexus models. It earned a 5 out of 5 reliability score. It is also listed with an average used priced of $32,812.

The base MSRP for a brand new 2020 Lexus GS is $51,065 – $85,010, according to Consumer Reports. A used model makes this luxury sedan a lot more affordable. Buying a used GS is starting to look pretty appealing. But what will used buyers miss out on, and which models are the best?

US News and World Reports says that any used model from the third generation is likely to be a winner. But that doesn’t mean each year offers the same features. Let’s look at a few of the third gen model years to see how they differ.

The redesigned 2013 Lexus GS

This year is the full redesign model year. The 2013 Lexus GS 300 introduced the third generation of the Lexus GS. However, this is the year with the most complaints. Springing for the 2014 or 2015 model years is more prudent and will potentially save you loads of cash. But you will miss out on some nice upgrades that the GS received for the 2016 model year.

2013 Lexus GS

The standard features for the Lexus GS are generous, and CR comments on the 2013 model is successful in combining the plush luxury, roomy interior, and trunk cargo with the sportier handle that its competitors accomplish. It scored a 5 out of 5 for reliability, but it is worth mentioning that the tech control layout is frustrating with a massive screen and awkward “mouse-like” control knob.

The 2016 and 2017 model years

The 2016 saw major upgrades. This is a great middle point between the cheaper (but more dated) previous years and the more modern (and more expensive) recent years. The 2016 Lexus GS also earned perfect reliability ratings. The CR review states that this model offers plenty of power and luxury, plus a new hybrid option became available.

Unfortunately, Lexus still hadn’t done away with the awkward infotainment display system yet. However, blind spot monitoring and rear traffic alerts are standard for the 2016 model year. It also got two new engine options and some new trim levels, including the GS F with a beefy V8. Plus, the 2016 saw a cosmetic upgrade with a bold new front grille. The 2016 Lexus GS is a reliable used option with the available Lexus safety suite.

A used Lexus GS is far more affordable than new, still offering many modern amenities

In 2017, navigation and the Lexus safety suite of driver assistance technologies earned standard status on the Lexus GS. The system includes lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and forward collision warning. Each of these features were add ons in previous models.

Newer used Lexus GS model years

From 2018 to the 2020 model year, it is possible to find great deals on a used Lexus GS. These are packed full of modern amenities that increase slightly each year. According to both US News and CR, you pretty much can’t go wrong with a third gen Lexus GS. However, it is important to check used car history before purchasing. Additionally, always check the VIN for possible recalls to ensure that any issues have been assessed and repaired if necessary.
