The automotive industry is in a constant battle over car sales supremacy. Once great titans like GM and Ford used to have strangleholds over domestic sales, but no longer. Instead, Japanese cars like Toyota, Honda, and Nissan have cornered the market. However, in the list of the best-selling cars for Q1 2022, Tesla seems like a very popular alternative.

  • Toyota Camry
  • Tesla Model Y
  • Toyota Corolla
  • Honda Accord
  • Tesla Model 3
  • Honda Civic
  • Nissan Altima

The Toyota Camry is the best selling car of 2022 so far

Despite the increasing interest in SUVs, trucks, and crossovers, Toyota’s best-selling car is hanging on. Car and Driver says that the popular sedan has sold an estimated 61,505 units. However, that impressive number still represents a 21 percent decrease in overall sales for the car.

Tesla has Toyota and Honda in its sights, and the Model Y is leading the charge

Tesla is one of the most profitable companies in the world and has two vehicles on the list of best-selling cars for the year so far. The first is the Tesla Model Y, which Tesla builds in its new Gigafactories. Still, despite scarcity, Tesla sold an estimated 55,000 units in the first quarter (Q1).

The Toyota Corolla’s sibling outsold it by quite a bit, but the Corolla is still relevant

Although the Toyota Corolla’s sales have dropped precipitously, it still keeps a spot on the best-selling cars list. In Q1, Toyota reportedly sold 47,501 units. Still, the Corolla is hopeless to keep up with the Camry and its 65,505 units.

Honda Accord remains on the list, having sold over 42,000 units so far

The Honda Accord wasn’t too far off of the Toyota Corolla’s pace for Q1 2022. The Accord sold a reported 42,039 units despite a 10 percent drop compared to 2021. However, like most cars on this list, the declines in sales are likely due to the shifting demand.

The Tesla Model 3 is a big seller for the company.

Tesla’s baby EV is a popular choice for folks looking for an EV without spending Model S money. The increasing interest in Tesla is apparent after selling an estimated 40,200 Model 3s in Q1.

Honda Civic’s sales are on the decline, but not enough to bump it off the list of best selling cars

The Honda Civic is fighting the same decreasing demand for sedans that other cars on this list are facing. Unfortunately, the sensible car staple is dealing with a 31 percent sales slump compared to last year. Still, Honda sold 38,515 units by the close of Q1 2022, securing a spot on the best-selling cars list.

The Nissan Altima is at the bottom, but it still outsells most cars

The Nissan Altima rounds the list out with the fewest sales. However, it’s a list of the best-selling cars, so the Altima still outperforms most vehicles in the sedan segment. According to Car and Driver, Nissan managed to sell 38,295 units, placing it at the bottom of the list. While that sounds bad, it isn’t nearly as awful as the 27 percent slump of the Nissan Sentra.
