The Best Selling SUV in 2024 Isn’t From Ford or Honda
Quiz time! What’s the most popular SUV in America? If you guessed that Ford or Honda had the best-selling SUVs, then that was a good try. But the SUV in the lead is actually the incredibly popular 2024 Toyota RAV4.
The 2024 Toyota RAV4 is the best-selling SUV
So far, in 2024, the Toyota RAV4 has a massive lead against rivals like the Honda CR-V, Ford Escape, and Nissan Rogue.
It doesn’t matter if the CR-V has more space or if the Rogue is more comfortable. The RAV4 can’t be stopped.
The 2024 Toyota RAV4 sold 248,295 models in the first half of 2024. During the first half of 2023, it moved 187,017 units, so it’s celebrating a 33% sales increase year-over-year.
Next, the 2024 Honda CR-V is in second place with 196,204 models sold. During the first half of 2023, it sold 163,697 models, so it’s also enjoying sales growth.
And in third place, we have the 2024 Nissan Rogue with 141,160 models sold. It’s experiencing a 3% sales decline compared to the first half of 2023.
But why is the RAV4 so successful? Aside from slightly upgraded tech, it has been mostly the same since 2019! Perhaps if it’s not broken, don’t fix it.
It has an MSRP of 28,675, making it competitive in its class. The 2024 Honda CR-V has an MSRP of $29,500. These prices don’t include the destination fee or dealership markups.
The RAV4 is pretty diverse with 13 trim levels, including two off-roading-oriented options. The TRD Off-Road takes things further than the Adventure trim.
The standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine provides 203 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque. Pairing the same engine with three electric motors provides the RAV4 Hybrid with 219 hp and an EPA-estimated 39 mpg combined.
Plus, Toyota has a reputation for building long-lasting, durable vehicles. The 2024 Toyota RAV4 has a reliability rating of 76 out of 100 from J.D.Power, which is average. Scores between 70 and 8- are average while scores between 81 and 90 are above average.
But there is still half a year left in 2024, so it’s possible that another contender will surpass the RAV4.
