When Kelley Blue Book set out to find the best SUVs for taller folks, it discovered that extra headroom, legroom, and windshield height were some crucial attributes. The 2023 Chevrolet Tahoe came in at the top for the best all-around room.
Chevy’s Tahoe SUV has 42.3 inches of headroom in the front and 44.5 inches of legroom up front. It also has 36.7 inches of third-row legroom, which is higher than the segment average. Chevrolet builds the Tahoe on a truck-based construction, and after a redesign in 2021, this SUV is more comfortable than ever. It also gets an EPA-estimated 20 mpg with the base Vinoy 8 engine. Kelley Blue Book says the GMC Yukon and Chevy Suburban are similar enough in size to be lumped in with the Tahoe here.
Other things to consider are a tilt-and-telescopic steering wheel and windshield height. A steering wheel that won’t adjust enough won’t be comfortable for long, and an improper fit with the windshield could leave the driver straining to see.
Ford’s Expedition is one of the best SUVs for tall people
The 2023 Ford Expedition has 42 inches of headroom in the front and 43.9 inches of legroom. Michael Young, a senior video and car reviewer at Kelley Blue Book, said, “Being 6-foot-4, the Ford Expedition provides ample room and then some.” Like the Tahoe, Ford builds the Expedition on a truck base, making it more rugged and capable than a regular SUV. The Expedition can also tow 9,300 pounds when properly equipped. It was KBB’s pick for Full-Size SUV Best Buy for 2023 and is now on the list of best SUVs for tall people.
The entry-level XL trim has five seats and comes standard with Ford’s Co-Pilot360. This includes tech such as blind-spot monitoring and forward emergency braking. If you can’t find the Expedition, the Expedition Max and Lincoln Navigator have almost identical headroom and legroom.
Kelley Blue Book says to beware of sunroofs if you are looking for the best SUVs for tall people. Andy Bornhop says, “Sunroofs are horrible for headroom.” So even if you test drive something and then order it with a sunroof, it might not offer enough headroom.
Don’t overlook the midsize Hyundai Santa Fe
Even though the 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe is a midsize SUV, it has 41.2 inches of front legroom and 44.1 inches of legroom. It received a refresh in 2021 and has a roomy cabin. An 8.8-inch touchscreen makes browsing the infotainment system easy, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto can be used wirelessly.
The standard safety features include forward collision warning with low-speed emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and high-beam assist. Opting for the base SE trim still gets 28 mpg on the highway from the 2.5L engine.
The best SUVs for tall people have enough headroom, legroom, and adjustable features to offer a comfortable fit. It would also be helpful to have adjustable seats so others can be comfortable driving in another position. Some SUVs might surprise you with how little room is actually available on the inside.
