Best Tires for an Electric Vehicle
Your electric vehicle needs to be fitted with tires that will be durable and quiet to ensure an optimal driving experience while extending your car’s driving range. Low-rolling-resistance, green car, or eco tires are engineered to either help improve your car’s fuel economy, or for use in electric vehicles. When tire shopping for your EV, make sure you’re looking at tires that will be best suited for an electric vehicle.
Michelin Energy Saver A/S
Having more than a hundred years in business, Michelin is an established name when it comes to tire innovation. On top of its inventive compound materials, and well-researched tread design, the Energy Saver also offers good rolling resistance properties and all-round traction.
Bridgestone Ecopia EP422 Plus
The Ecopia EP422 Plus is engineered to improve your electric vehicle battery’s range and comes in several sizes. While the tire’s level of efficiency is good when new, drivers have reported that the tires wear down quickly, according to reviews on Consumer Reports. One reviewer also noted that they had difficulty using the tires in a snowy climate and stated they are “no substitute for snow tires.”
Toyo Versado Eco
The Versado Eco tire is, according to Toyo, specifically made to improve efficiency for not only electric vehicles but other environmentally friendly cars as well. The tire’s tread sipes are designed to reduce irregular wear, while its circumferential grooves quickly evacuate water.
On top of that, the naturally derived compound materials are less toxic to the environment when left on the pavement after they are shed from the tire during the drive. In a review on Amazon, one driver did note that the “tires behave very differently depending on the season.”
Nokian eNTYRE 2.0
The eNTYRE 2.0, made by the Finnish company Nokian Tyres, is meant specifically for use on North American roads. The tires are able to achieve low rolling resistance through the use of a High Modulus tread compound. The company also uses a green production process, avoiding carcinogenic or toxic chemicals. The process it uses to make the eNTYRE 2.0 makes use of purified oils instead.
Consumer Reports notes that the tires do have very good snow traction as well as very good hydro-planning resistance and dry braking. It also stated that the tires have fair wet stopping performance, which was the only area where Consumer Reports rated the tires below good.
Yokohama Avid Ascend (T)
The Avid Ascend from Yokohama features tread block bridges that reduce the movement of treads. This leads to reduced noise, even treadwear, and improved fuel efficiency. Furthermore, the sipes have been designed to offer better grip all-season round.
According to the tire manufacturer, the computed technology used to make the Avid Ascend contributes to the tire’s low rolling resistance. This is vital since it improves the tire’s economy and durability. Consumer Reports rated the Yokohama Avid Ascend (T) as a “quiet, comfortable tire with impressive tread life.”
Firestone Champion Fuel Fighter
The Champion Fuel Fighter has a brand new tread pattern that improves the tire’s durability, low-rolling resistance, and efficiency. Firestone’s Champion Fuel Fighter also comes with a 70,000-mile warranty.
After testing, Consumer Reports found that the tire offers impressive fuel efficiency and excellent rolling resistance. The tire also scored very good in dry braking, noise, and hydroplaning resistance. In all other categories Consumer Reports tested the tire received a rating of good.
Continental TrueContact
The TrueContact tire features Continental’s EcoPlus technology, which offers low rolling resistance that improves your electric vehicle’s range. The tire’s tread compound and traction grooves further provide an extra grip for wet surfaces. While Consumer Reports gave the True Contact tire a rating of good for wet braking, the tire only scored fair for ice braking.
Goodyear Assurance CS Fuel Max
According to Goodyear, the Assurance CS Fuel Max tire can save you up to 2,600 miles worth of fuel over the tires’ life, which is based on internal testing completed by Goodyear. While its retail price can be a bit high, the amount saved in the long run, if true, could offset the cost of the purchase.
While Consumer Reports found the Assurance CS Fuel Max to have excellent hydroplaning resistance and rolling resistance, the reporting agency states the tire has just average tread life. Something to consider for those who drive often or long distances.
The well-known tire manufacturer is also researching ways of using soybean oil as an ingredient in the tire making process. This would see a decrease in the amount of petroleum-based oils currently used.
