The Best Toyota Cars for Highway Fuel Economy
As gas prices continue to rise in the U.S., finding a fuel-efficient car is essential. Better fuel economy for commuting to the office, longer trips, or daily errands is a must. Toyota has built a reputation for affordable, economical sedans and SUVs. Many can get you some of the market’s best highway fuel economy numbers. Here’s a list of the 10 best Toyota cars for highway fuel economy.
1. Toyota Prius Prime (54 mpg)
The Toyota Prius has long been one of the most popular hybrid cars on the market. It’s known for being an affordable, fuel-efficient daily commuter.
The Prime model is a plug-in hybrid (PHEV). It’s slower than the standard Prius and has less interior space due to a larger battery. But it has a more upscale interior, a larger battery, and better range and fuel economy. That’s why TrueCar named it the fourth-best car of 2022 when it comes to gas mileage, thanks to that 54 mpg highway fuel economy.
2. Toyota Camry Hybrid LE (53 mpg)
Second on the list of best Toyota cars for highway fuel economy is another hybrid, the Camry Hybrid LE. The LE trim is the base model for the Camry and boasts the best highway fuel economy of the trims at 53 mpg. Edmunds taps the LE as the recommended trim for the 2022 Toyota Camry. TrueCar ranks it third-best for gas mileage in midsize cars.
3. Toyota Prius Eco (53 mpg)
The Prius’ Eco trim shines as one of the best Toyota cars for fuel economy. It’s better in the city with a rating of 58 mpg, but the 53 mpg highway still puts it close to the top of these rankings.
Though it may be down on some of the options featured on other Prius trim levels, the Prius Eco still comes with plenty of safety features and technology like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa compatibility.
4. Toyota Corolla Hybrid (52 mpg)
Toyota’s compact sedan, the Corolla, also has a hybrid option with excellent highway fuel economy. The Corolla Hybrid takes the same hybrid powertrain from a Prius but puts it in the four-door Corolla platform.
Due to its size, cargo capacity is down, but the highway fuel economy is one of the best you can get in a new Toyota.
5. Toyota Prius (50 mpg)
The Prius’ Eco trim is one of the most efficient hybrids on the market. But most of the other Prius trims, the XLE, LE, Limited, and Nightshade, all average 50 mpg for highway fuel economy. City fuel economy is even better at 54 mpg, but the highway figures help the Prius rank second on TrueCar’s list of best compact cars for gas mileage. There are three other Prius trims: the all-wheel drive XLE, Limited, and Nightshade. All are rated at 47 mpg highway.
6. Toyota Camry Hybrid (47 mpg)
The Camry Hybrid LE trim is one of the most fuel-efficient Toyota cars on the road. The other Camry Hybrid trims – the SE, XLE, SE Nightshade, and XSE – all boast great numbers for highway fuel economy at 47 mpg.
The other trims have the same hybrid powertrain and add extra perks like sporty styling in the SE, leather upholstery in the XLE, black trim in the SE Nightshade, bigger wheels, and lower-profile tires in the XSE.
7. Toyota Avalon Hybrid XLE (44 mpg)
Like the Prius, one of the best Toyota cars for highway fuel economy comes in a specific trim. Toyota’s full-size sedan—the Avalon—comes with a hybrid powertrain similar to what’s in the Camry Hybrid. It’s longer, wider, and heavier than the Camry, with a more luxurious interior.
8. Toyota Avalon Hybrid (43 mpg)
The XLE is the most efficient Avalon trim, but the two other trims, the XSE and Limited, also have great highway fuel economy. The XSE has sportier styling with larger wheels and technology like a sunroof and wireless charging. The Limited has an upgraded interior, heated seats, wood trim, and extra driving aids. These extra options mean the cars are slightly heavier and less efficient than the XLE trim.
9. Toyota Corolla Hatchback SE (41 mpg)
The Corolla Hatchback is the best non-hybrid Toyota car for highway fuel economy but only in the SE trim with an automatic transmission. The Corolla Hatchback’s 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine shines on the highway compared to the city at 32 mpg. You won’t be missing out on standard equipment with the SE trim. It still comes with plenty of features like an eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa compatibility, as well as the Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 driver aid system.
10. Toyota RAV4 Prime (38 mpg)
The best Toyota SUV for highway fuel economy is the RAV4 Prime. Similar to the Prius Prime, the RAV4 Prime is a PHEV. It has more power than the RAV4 Hybrid with a larger battery. Overall, it pushes out 302 horsepower with an electric range of 42 miles. It’s the quickest RAV4 model, with 0 to 60 mph in 5.6 seconds and the best for highway fuel economy.
