The most popular nameplates in the country have a habit of retaining their popularity year after year. Americans prioritize their favorite models, from the Ford F-Series to the Toyota Camry. However, Toyota sent one standout full-size sedan to the chopping block despite its many redeeming qualities. Now that it’s discontinued, you might be looking right past one of the best used car models on the market: the Toyota Avalon.

Unfortunately for would-be sedan shoppers looking for one of the best large passenger cars on the market, Toyota discontinued the Avalon after the 2022 model year. Toyota replaced the Avalon in its model offerings with the Crown, a lifted take on a family sedan. Of course, the move made sense for the brand. The Avalon never enjoyed the sales successes of the smaller Camry and Corolla sedans.

However, the Toyota Avalon is one of the best used car models on the market in terms of safety. For starters, a late model Avalon like the 2022 model may have an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick rating based on its crashworthiness and safety equipment.

Moreover, regarding dependability, the Toyota Avalon has a reputation for going the distance. According to iSeeCars, a used Avalon has a 22.0% chance of reaching and exceeding 250,000 miles. While that is celebration-worthy, it’s also a bragging point for the Avalon among passenger cars. In fact, the Avalon is the only passenger car in the top 10 models most likely to last 250,000 or more miles.

Finally, the Avalon offered diversity that other sensible sedans simply didn’t. For instance, the late-model Toyota Avalon was available as a fuel-sipping hybrid. With as much as 44 mpg combined EPA-estimated fuel economy, the Avalon Hybrid was a full-size sedan with compact car fuel economy. Of course, the 3.5L V6 trims were the only Avalons you’d expect to see in the winner’s circle.
