Best Used Chevy Silverado Pickup Truck Years: 1 Model to Hunt for and 2 to Avoid
The good news about this truck? It has been around since 1999, which leaves a lot of options on the market. However, the best used Chevy Silverado pickup truck years are few and far between. This doesn’t mean that the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is worth avoiding altogether, but it might take a little effort to find a reliable used truck.
2014 is one of the best used Chevy Silverado pickup truck years
Looking at the ratings provided by Consumer Reports shows a lot of red. The essential scores provided are reliability and owner satisfaction. Many years of the Chevy Silverado show low reliability and owner satisfaction scores. The 2014 Chevy Silverado 1500 still had below-average scores, but the best of the bad scores. The used truck returned 16 mpg overall during testing.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 20 recalls for this particular year. If you happen upon a 2014 version, make sure the important recalls have been taken care of. If you are searching for a reliable used Chevy Silverado pickup truck, this year is one of the best of the worst.
2021 Chevy Silverado is not one of the best used Chevy Silverado pickup truck years
The 2021 Chevy Silverado 1500 might be new, but it doesn’t have excellent ratings. 2021 was the last year before the 2022 redesign, and it shows. The reliability score is rock bottom, and the owner satisfaction score was only average. This pickup truck already has five recalls, too.
The NHTSA did give the 2021 Silverado good ratings on its crash tests. For the overall crash rating, it received four stars. The rest of the tests received high marks, such as side crash, frontal crash, and rollover. Consumer Reports says that the interior is nice and quiet, while the fuel economy was 17 mpg overall.
2017 was not a great year for Chevrolet trucks
The 2017 Chevy Silverado pickup truck was another miss for the Chevrolet brand. 2015-2017 showed the same unreliable truck nature with low owner satisfaction scores. The good news is that this year only had six recalls to fix, which have hopefully been taken care of. This year returned 16 mpg overall during testing as well.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the 2017 Chevy Silverado mixed scores for crashworthiness. The pickup truck received a ” good ” score on the front, moderate overlap test and side, rear, and roof crush tests. The rest were “marginal” or not rated at all.
The 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 showed improved scores on the road test. The owner satisfaction score was average, but the predicted reliability is still in the red. Those who are loyal to the Chevrolet brand will probably stick with this pickup truck lineup, but there are more reliable options out there.
