Toyota’s three-row midsize SUV is one of the most highly renowned in its class. The automaker’s long history of reliability makes it an excellent family vehicle. The Toyota Highlander comes with plenty of features and has multiple options in a few different areas. All-wheel drive is available, as is a hybrid drivetrain if you’d prefer.

Higher mileage units fall below the $20,000 mark. Luckily with most Toyota vehicles, breaking 100,000 miles doesn’t mean much. In many cases, they’ll last for more than double that mileage with proper care and maintenance. Lower mileage Highlanders do eclipse $20,000 but that is rare. We even saw a 57,700 mile Highlander priced at $25,944, which doesn’t seem too bad.

2015 Honda Pilot – a reliable midsize SUV

Honda’s midsize offering has plenty to love, including its 3.5-liter V6 engine. It can seat up to eight passengers, which makes it one of the most accommodating cabins in the midsize class. Just like Toyota, Honda’s history of excellent reliability and long-lasting products make it a great family vehicle option. It also gets an estimated 18 city and 25 highway mpg with its front-wheel-drive variant.

The 250 horsepower Honda Pilot has a lot to offer inside the vehicle as well. It comes standard with three-zone climate control, an 8-inch information display, Bluetooth, rearview camera, and more. For just a bit more money, the SE trim adds a power moonroof and rear-seat DVD entertainment. Like the Highlander, Pilot models exceeding 100,000 miles tend to be the ones falling below $20,000.

The Hyundai Santa Fe stands out on its own among the Toyotas and Hondas of the world. Hyundai has made massive strides in improving the quality of its vehicles. The 2017 Santa Fe is filled with standard features as well as one of the most powerful V6 engines in its class. It received a new exterior and interior styling for this model year, so it’s about as up-to-date as you can get without buying a new model.

The 290 horsepower 3.3-liter V6 engine easily competes with the top models in its class. This SUV can seat 7 passengers, and is available in both front- and all-wheel-drive. It also has great fuel economy, averaging an estimated 18 city and 25 highway mpg with the FWD version. Lower mileage 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe models are listed right around the $20,000 mark, with higher mileage units falling far below it to the $15,000 range.

2015 Toyota Venza – almost a crossover

Though the Toyota Venza of today is much closer to being a crossover, the older versions are more of a wagon midsize SUV. There’s plenty of room inside these vehicles, which both the automaker and reviewers boast about. For this model year, it gained a standard rearview camera and the Limited model got standard AWD. Its two engine and drivetrain options make selecting one easy for anyone to fit their needs.

The 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine produces 181 horsepower and gets 20 city and 26 highway mpg in both FWD and AWD. The 3.5-liter V6 produces 268 horsepower and averages a slightly worse 19 city and 26 highway mpg in the FWD version, 18/25 in the AWD model. The spacious interior and good fuel economy make this SUV a great cheaper option for any family. Most units found online hover right around the $20,000 mark.

Though most know Buick for its older generation of sedans, it made a lot of great SUVs in recent years. The Enclave has three rows and a premium interior, powered by a fuel-efficient V6 engine. It only has one engine option, but it produces 288 horsepower and gets an estimated 17 city and 24 highway mpg.

In its base form, it comes standard with tri-zone climate control, a rearview camera with park assist, 18-inch wheels, a 6.5-inch touchscreen, Buick’s Intellilink system, and more. Slightly more expensive Leather Group models gain leather, heated front seats and steering wheel, and blind-spot monitoring. Many higher mileage units drop well below the $20,000 mark, and lower mileage Enclaves are priced right around $20,000.

Midsize SUVs are some of the most popular vehicles in America and the world. They’ve grown in popularity recently, especially those with three rows of seats. These vehicles all provide plenty of space for passengers and cargo alike. They’re even quite fuel-efficient and come with a surprising number of standard features. That’s why they are at the top of KBB’s list of best midsize SUVs for under $20,000.
