Consumer Reports has been testing the Subaru Impreza for almost 20 years. Thanks to that detailed history, the 2020 year is one of the best used Subaru Impreza options out there. It has high scores for reliability, and with 27 mpg, it also received the “green choice” accolade.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) awarded the 2020 Impreza the Top Safety Pick. The Impreza received a good overall safety score and high scores on the other IIHS tests. Subaru does equip the Impreza with all-wheel drive standard.

Subaru’s EyeSight safety suite is optional this year but not a standard feature. If buyers opt for EyeSight, it comes with adaptive cruise control (ACC), lake keep assist (LKA), and pre-collision braking. EyeSight also includes pre-collision throttle management, which helps detect objects and slow the vehicle’s speed.

The 2018 Subaru Impreza received high scores for reliability again, in addition to the green choice accolade. Somehow this year of the Impreza has an owner-reported fuel economy of 29 mpg overall, which is two mpg better than the 2020 version. Some of the reliability trouble spots like the engine, transmission, and drive system, were not an issue. The value and styling of Subaru were high notes for owners.

The IIHS gave the 2018 Impreza sedan the Top Safety Pick Plus award. All-wheel drive is standard, and after the redesign in 2017, this version gets a lot right. It offers a comfortable and safe ride.

Avoid the 2013 Subaru vehicle, if at all possible

2013 did not qualify for the best used Subaru Impreza year. Consumer Reports gave it low scores for both reliability and owner satisfaction. Owners reported some drawbacks of noise, uncomfortable seats, and small cargo space. The engine, transmission, and drive system gave owners issues in the reliability trouble spot areas.

The 2013 Impreza doesn’t offer much in the way of safety. It has traction control, electronic stability control, and anti-lock brakes. The IIHS gave it the Top Safety Pick award. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave this 2013 sedan high scores on the crashworthiness tests.

The Subaru Impreza has been on a positive trend in the last few years, especially with the 2022 version. As 2023 options roll in, more reliable used Subaru Impreza options will be available. Subaru’s EyeSight system is helpful on the newer models but should come with more standard safety features.
