In fact, there are some used SUVs on the market that you can buy for less than the original MSPR, and still get good fuel economy. It seems like the models of used SUV on the market are endless, and it can be hard to know exactly where to start looking, but according to Consumer Reports, if you value fuel economy, these are the used SUVs you should be looking at.

For this list, Consumer Reports specifically looked at cars that will turn five years old, namely 2015 models. They say that this is because after 5 years most of the issues with a car will have revealed themselves and you can tell if there will be any reliability issues, or at least know what to expect. They are also new enough to compete with newer model years while not sacrificing all of the safety tech and style we’ve come to know and love.

2015 Lexus NX

The Lexus NX offers a little bit of power, a little bit of luxury, and a little bit of fuel economy. There were a few minor complaints that owners had mostly regarding the interior which is cramped with a mixture of nice material with lower-quality touches. Owners reported getting an average of 24mpg overall.

2015 Subaru Forester

The Subaru Forester is an underrated crowd favorite, and it also happens to be one of the most reasonably priced SUVs on this list. In fact, you can find this model year on the used car market for as little as $11,700 in good, running condition, and with it you can expect to get around 26mg.

2015 Honda CR-V

The Honda CR-V is another affordable option that is quite reliable. There were some improvements in this model year that made it better than previous generations, and it gets one of the best consumer-claimed gas mileages at 27mpg.

2015 Nissan Rogue

The Nissan Rogue is many people’s go-to SUV for a low-cost family car, and who can blame them? Nissan has a reputation for reliability and its cars are inexpensive to purchase and maintain. The 2015 model year doesn’t have the best customer satisfaction ratings, but it does offer some pretty good gas mileage for the price, getting an average of 26mpg.

2015 Toyota RAV4

The Toyota RAV4 is just as good off the road as it is in, and owners were generally pleased with their decision to purchase one. The RAV4 wasn’t designed to be a luxury SUV, and this shows with the rough handling and suspension as well as the lack of insulation that causes passengers to hear a lot of road noise. It is a good option for getting good gas mileage though, and owners reported getting an average of 25mpg.

Buying a used SUV doesn’t have to be a sacrifice, and you can still get a lot of the features you are looking for in an older model SUV without that ‘new car’ price tag. These SUVs are just old enough to make them worth the price, and you can expect to get better gas mileage no matter which one you choose.
