First off, let’s just say that for under 15Gs, these used SUVs won’t be recent vehicles, nor will they be low mileage creampuffs. They have the potential to be low mileage examples, but mostly, they’ll all have over 100,000 miles on the ticker. Generally, the lower the mileage, the better the car/SUV overall will be. That said, there are some really great used SUVs you can scoop up if 15 grand is your threshold. 

Also, keep in mind that all used car prices are extremely high right now in 2022, with the average used car price close to $30,000. So if you can hold off until later in the year, prices should be starting to float back down to Earth. 

iSeeCars says that three things beyond price should be considered when buying used. How is long-term reliability, what kind of safety rating does it score, and how has it retained value through the years? There might be newer, and cheaper, used cars out there, but there is probably a reason why, and it won’t be good.

2013 BMW X3

The average price for this year’s X3 is a tad under $15,000. You may be surprised a BMW shows up on this list. Keep in mind, though, that dealer maintenance costs could be higher than some others here. Also, you should probably pass on any X3 with over 100,000 miles on the ticker.

2013 BMW X1

Here’s another BMW for this category, just to pique your curiosity. Its average used car price is right at $14,000. The difference between the X1 and X3 comes down to slightly more power with the X3, but better fuel economy in the X1. So for this category, the X1 could win for that reason alone.

2013 Volvo XC90

This Volvo XC90 comes in on average at just under $14,000. Reviews suggested average yearly maintenance at $800 a year, which is actually good. Granted, this will have more miles, but Volvos are known for their durability and value. Loaded XC90s when new cost $50,000 for the Platinum AWD models.

2013 Subaru Outback

The AWD Outback comes in at $13,500, giving great value for the money. It especially holds its value well, with the reputation it has built up over the years. Some 2013 Subaru Outbacks were prone to piston ring wear, so have a mechanic look it over before popping for one. 

2013 Buick Encore

Also around $13,500, this was Buick’s first stab into the smaller SUV crossover category. It is based on the Chevy Sonic’s platform, so it’s not a large or even midsize SUV; it’s small. Some owners complain about a lack of power and limited cargo space, but they maintain their value well. And Buick threw lots of luxury features into the Encore.

2013 Subaru Forester

Yes, another Subaru, this one a Forester. What’s the difference between it and the Outback? The Outback is a bit larger, but with basically the same cargo space, engine, and transmission. The rear seat in an Outback can handle more kids, but the rear of the Forrester is more erect for better cargo arrangement. The Outback also has a longer wheelbase for a slightly better ride. But the price of a Forester comes in at under $13,000.
