Better Than a Tesla? The 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 6 SE Gets up to 361 Miles of EV Range
The race to get the best electric range is heating up again, thanks to the 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 6’s new feat. The results are in, and the sleeker version of the Ioniq 5 proved that it could achieve an EPA-estimated 361 miles of range on a full charge. That’s impressive. In fact, it’s even more impressive than the current Tesla Model 3.
The 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 6 SE RWD bests the Tesla Model 3 in a couple of key areas
The recent EPA testing also confirmed that the 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 6 could achieve a combined rating of 140 MPGe. According to Fueleconomy.gov’s Top 10 list, that means the Ioniq 6 is on par with the 2023 Lucid Air Pure and Touring models, and it bests the 2023 Tesla Model 3 (132 MPGe).
In case you’re wondering, the most range that you can get out of a Model 3 is 356 miles. That’s only a few miles less than the Ioniq 6’s range. However, it’s worth noting that to get the Ioniq 6’s spectacular range, you must opt for the SE trim with rear-wheel drive and a 77.4-kWh battery pack. The Tesla Model 3, on the other hand, gets its range while spinning all four of its wheels paired with an 82-kWh battery. So, it’s easy to argue that the Model 3 could still be the better choice.
That may be the case, but that doesn’t take away from the engineering that went into the Ioniq 6. In addition to the ingenious powertrain design, the engineers that built the Ioniq 6 made it very aerodynamic. As such, the Ioniq achieves a drag coefficient of 0.22, while the Tesla is a smidge behind with a 0.23 drag coefficient.
The Ioniq 6’s incredible range depends on which trim level you pick
While it’s easy to bask in the majesty of the 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 6’s ultimate range, we should warn you that it’s only able to get the 361 in its base form. According to Hyundai, there are six different Ioniq 6 configurations to choose from:
- Ioniq 6 SE RWD Long Range (18-inch wheels) – 361 miles (140 MPGe)
- Ioniq 6 SE AWD Long Range (18-inch wheels) – 316 miles (121 MPGe)
- Ioniq 6 SEL RWD (20-inch wheels) – 305 miles (117 MPGe)
- Ioniq 6 SEL AWD (20-inch wheels) – 270 miles (103 MPGe)
- Ioniq 6 Limited (20-inch wheels) – 305 miles (117 MPGe)
- Ioniq 6 Limited (20-inch wheels) – 270 miles (103 MPGe)
As we can see, if you want Tesla-beating range, you’ll have to go with the SE model with the 18-inch wheels.
How much will the 2023 Ioniq 6 cost?
Hyundai has not released the official pricing or the exact release date for the 2023 Ioniq 6 yet. However, there are plenty of more details about the car. Most notably, the Ioniq 6 will support fast charging in the form of 400-volt and 800-volt infrastructures. That means that with a 350-kW charger, the Ioniq’s charge can go from 10 percent to 80 percent in only 18 minutes.
When using the standard Level 2 onboard charger, Ioniq owners can expect a full charge in 7 hours and 10 minutes. Other features include over-the-air updates, a host of sophisticated safety features, and an updated infotainment system.
