In 2021, Volkswagen debuted the ID.4. This small electric crossover has remained popular since its introduction, with VW making subtle upgrades over the past couple of years. Here’s a look at the biggest hit and miss for the 2023 Volkswagen ID.4. 

Overview of the 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 trims and ranges 

The 2023 ID.4 is an attractive all-electric SUV. Volkswagen offers it in five trim levels. The ID.4 Standard model starts at $38,995. It features rear-wheel drive and packs an SK ON battery with an EPA-estimated range of 209 miles.

The next trim level is the $43,995 ID.4 Pro, with an LG battery and an EPA-estimated driving range of 275 miles. The Pro is available in RWD or all-wheel drive. The AWD version costs more, starting at $47,795, and drops the range to 255 miles. 

The upper three trim levels include the S, starting at $43,955, the Pro S, at $48,995, and the Pro S Plus, retailing for $51,445.

The S is available only with RWD and has an estimated range of 209 miles. The Pro S is available with RWD or AWD. The RWD trim has an EPA-estimated range of 275 miles. The Pro S trim with AWD starts at $52,795 and can go about 255 miles. 

The Pro S Plus with RWD has an EPA-estimated range of 275 miles. In contrast, the Pro S Plus with AWD has an estimated range of 255 miles and a higher starting point of $55,245.

Overall, all of the RWD trims have one motor making 201 hp. In contrast, the AWD trims consist of two motors boosting the power to 295 hp. 

Biggest hit: The 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 excels in interior comfort 

The 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 offers plenty to like. But it especially shines in interior comfort. The cabin is spacious and provides a considerable amount of cargo room for a small crossover. It provides 30.3 cubic feet of space behind the second row. And when the rear seats are folded down, users have 64.2 cubic feet of cargo space. 

The ID.4 fits five riders on roomy seats covered in cloth and synthetic leather upholstery. In addition, the front row comes standard with six-way manually adjustable heated seats. The interior can also be upgraded to include heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, and 12-way power-adjustable front seats with massage functionality and memory settings.

Biggest miss: This VW EV falters in interior quality  

Although the ID.4 provides a spacious cabin with plenty of storage room and comfortable seating, its interior materials aren’t exactly high-quality. That might seem strange given the ID.4’s comfort. However, its lack of interior quality has nothing really to do with seating or storage but rather with the controls and cheap plastics throughout the cabin. 

One frustrating control is for the windows. Like most passenger cars, the ID.4 has four side windows; however, only two switches control all four windows. That makes for an annoying experience when trying to figure out which window to lower or raise.

In addition to the window control issue, the cheap plastic used throughout the cabin is a significant drawback for a vehicle whose base model starts at $40,000.
