We could tell you why the Jeep Grand Wagoneer is an epic SUV all day. Seriously, there are plenty of unique features to share about this capable and luxurious ride. However, the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer is pretty thirsty, and Stellantis may have a solution on the way. 

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer isn’t great on fuel 

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer gets an EPA-estimated 13 mpg in the city and up to 18 mpg on the highway. This means that the Grand Wagoneer is quite thirsty. This didn’t seem like too much of an issue until gas prices started to increase. 

For comparison’s sake, the 2022 Ford Expedition gets an EPA-estimated 17 mpg in the city and up to 23 mpg on the highway. The 2022 Chevy Tahoe gets an EPA-estimated 21 mpg in the city and up to 28 mpg on the highway. 

So, the Grand Wagoneer is a bit thirstier than its rivals. However, this might not be an issue for long. According to Motor 1, Stellantis has six new Hurricane engines on the way. One option will match the output of larger V8 units while being up to 15 percent more efficient. 

How much power does the Grand Wagoneer have? 

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer is powered by a 6.4-liter V8 engine with 471 hp and 455 lb-ft of torque. The engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, and the Wagoneer can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 5.7 seconds. 

However, the new 3.0-liter twin-turbo Hurricane engine could make things more interesting. The Standard Output (SO) version is optimized to provide a better fuel economy and pumps out more than 400 hp and 450 lb-ft of torque. The SO engine uses cooled exhaust gas circulation. 

The High Output (HO) variant brings the muscle with over 500 hp and 575 lb-ft of torque. It promises to deliver an improved fuel economy with heavy loads, such as towing. 

On that note, when properly equipped, the Grand Wagoneer can tow up to 10,000 lbs and carry a payload of up to 1,360 lbs. The 2022 Ford Expedition can tow up to 9,300 lbs, and the Chevy Tahoe can tow up to 7,900 lbs. 

The new Hurricane engine could help the Grand Wagoneer tow, even more, giving it an even bigger edge over rivals. Plus, the 3.0-liter inline-six engine is a deep-skirt cast-aluminum block with an aluminum oil pan to reduce weight. 

Reportedly, Jeep says the new engine provides a flat torque curve while the engine maintains at least 90 percent of its peak torque from 2,350 PRM to redline. So, the Jeep Grand Wagoneer could get even faster. 

When will the Grand Wagoneer get the Hurricane engine?

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer could gain the new Hurricane engine by the end of the year. Rumors suggest that the next-generation Dodge Charger and Challenger could gain the engine soon. 

This makes sense because these muscles cars are about to go electric, and the Hurricane engines are capable of electric and hybrid applications. However, there won’t be a hybrid variant at launch. 

The Hurrican engine is designed for larger vehicles like the Wagoneer, so we wouldn’t be surprised if the Ram 1500 and Dodge Durango are in line for this upgrade. We should learn more as the New York Auto Show approaches.
