We’ve all seen Dodge’s news that the marque is discontinuing Challenger and Charger. However, before these two modern Mopars head off into the sunset, the automaker is releasing a series of Last Call models, including a Black Ghost tribute model. However, if the Last Call model isn’t enough for you, you can try your hand at buying the original 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T SE “Black Ghost” as it rolls across the auction block in May.
What is the Black Ghost Challenger?
The 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T SE “Black Ghost” was the street racing mount of the late Godfrey Qualls, a U.S. Army veteran, and tenured Detroit police officer. While it might seem scandalous that a police officer was taking to the streets to race, it’s quite a story. Other racers and spectators told tales of a black Dodge Challenger that would appear, dominate street races, and disappear as ominously as it appeared.
Fast forward to today, and Mecum announced that the venerable street racing machine is up for grabs at the upcoming Indianapolis auction series running from May 12th to the 23rd. It represents a Detroit heirloom and an exciting addition to someone’s collection. Moreover, the malicious-looking Mopar will likely sell for an enormous sum, given its spectacular story.
How much horsepower did the Black Ghost have?
Quall’s 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T SE Black Ghost packed a 426 Hemi V8 engine. That powerplant produced around 425 horsepower and 490 lb-ft of torque.
While that power figure might not seem as stratospheric as the supercharged Hellcats of today, it was more than enough to smoke the tires of the classic Challenger. Moreover, the Black Ghost moniker is less a result of outright speed and more of a testament to the sinister showmanship of Qualls. He would appear, street race, and disappear into the darkness of Detroit’s nights like a ghost.
How much is a 2023 Challenger Black Ghost?
The original 1970 Black Ghost inspired one of Dodge’s Last Call Challengers, a series of send-off models. The 2023 Dodge Challenger Black Ghost is a fitting tribute and starts at around $99,315.
Of course, TorqueNews says that in addition to the near six-figure price tag, the special edition coupe will be limited to just 300 copies. However, instead of a 426 Hemi, the new Last Call model will pack an 807-horsepower 6.2L supercharged V8. Still, it’ll be outstanding to see some of these alligator-skinned Challengers hit the street to pay homage to its street racing legend namesake.
