In the past several years, BMW has stepped up to the plate to tackle major issues in the automotive industry. The production of hybrid and electric vehicles was just the start, with further efforts being made to push towards a more sustainable future, both for the market and along the entire production line, down to how and where materials are being sourced. You could describe the new goals for BMW as ambitious, but at their latest conference, they promised that 2021 will truly be a game-changer.

An all-electric future

While BMW is still right at working producing plenty of their usual performance and luxury vehicles powered by gasoline engines, they have slowly begun introducing hybrid and all-electric models to their lineup, like the flagship hybrid the BMW i8. If that wasn’t enough to give you an exciting peek into the future for BMW, they also have some very aggressive goals and plans moving forward over the next several years.

Working through the phases

The team at BMW has established achievable goals through the implementation and planning of their phases for the next decade. By 2023 the company plans to have a substantial stake in electric vehicles, moving towards having 90% of the market segments having completely electric model options. By 2025 the hope is that electric cars will have grown in sales by as much as 50% year over year — which sounds both impressive and ambitious. By the 2030s, the brand has announced that they aim to convert MINI to electric-only models.

Electric, digital, circular

It is clear that BMW has set its sights for the future with clear goals in mind, pushing for a new era of almost all-electric cars. To do so, this plan works in phases to comfortably introduce the option for the electric drivetrain to the market, rather than forcing customers to dive right in. The long-term goal is sustainable growth in the electric car segment while still maintaining the BMW culture that many owners have come to know and love.

“We have a clear roadmap for making the transformation of our industry a real competitive advantage for BMW in the coming years: uncompromisingly electric, digital, and circular.”

It might come as a somewhat upsetting, but not very surprising, shock to some BMW fans who have held long-term affections for the keynote engines, like their lovable straight six-cylinder, but it does not look like we will be giving up on gasoline-powered engines quite yet.
