The BMW Z4 has been around on and off for nearly twenty years, so there’s no shortage of possibilities to fit most budgets. Better yet, some generations offer a traditional soft convertible top or a folding hard top to let in the light. Check out the BMW Z4, the closest roadster to a German Mazda MX-5 Miata

The BMW Z4 boasts handsome styling, eager performance, and a roadster platform. As a result, the little convertible Bimmer is a solid future classic. Moreover, considering BMW will likely discontinue the model after 2024, the model will only get more exclusive.

Depending on what you want out of the BMW model, the Z4 is a versatile used convertible option. The newest M40i models from the G29 generation share the thrust-happy turbocharged B58 inline-six-cylinder mill with the coupe-only Toyota GR Supra 3.0. Consequently, the Z4 M40i is properly fast.

According to Car and Driver’s testing, a 2020 BMW Z4 M40i hit 60 mph in 3.8 seconds on its way to a 12.3-second quarter mile. That’s 0.1 seconds behind an automatic-equipped GR Supra 3.0 in a sprint to 60.

However, the E89 generation (2009-2016) is a solid aesthetic and technological upgrade from the early E85 and E86 models without the G29’s price tag. For instance, fortunate fans can snag a 2010 Z4 sDrive30i for around $17,590 with average mileage, depending on location and title status. Moreover, with a rigid folding hardtop, the E89 model is a solid alternative to the Mercedes-Benz SLK.

Is a used BMW Z4 a good buy?

A used BMW Z4, especially the early E85 models, are affordable sports car option. However, RepairPal gives the model a reliability score of 3.0 out of 5.0, with an annual repair cost of around $895. That means the model could be a bit more labor-intensive than some of its rivals.

Of course, well-maintained examples can potentially be reliable, enjoyable vehicles, albeit with higher average ownership costs than a comparable Mazda MX-5 Miata or Ford Mustang Convertible

Is the BMW Z4 discontinued?

BMW will likely discontinue its convertible roadster model around the 2025 timeframe. That means the latest models of the G29 cars will be the last drop-top Z cars barring some electrified or hybridized replacement.

Why did BMW stop making the Z4?

BMW says the diminutive drop-top model hasn’t been selling well compared to other models. Combine that with the industry push for electrification, and the Z4’s place in the lineup is in jeopardy. It’s unclear whether the German automaker will revive the Z badge for another Z4 or another model, like the now-discontinued Z3 and Z8.
