These images of the next Hyundai Kona make the subcompact SUV segment a lot more interesting. If you remember Hyundai’s Seven Concept from last year, the new Kona design looks somewhat familiar. But we like how Hyundai designers have stepped up with much bolder graphic breakups and knife-edge sculpting on its flanks. The playful design additions keep the Kona fresh and vibrant.

What’s new about the 2024 Hyundai Kona besides the design?

The thin lines of headlights and taillights are becoming more popular these days, but the Kona utilizes them well. A more lifted stance makes for a more aggressive spinner rather than a boring commuter car look. Another thing we like is that the three separate Kona models each have their own fascia, with the Kona N being the most aggressive. Its body color wheel arches on the EV and N versions better define the design breaks and details.

But just as the styling is all new, the entire platform is as well. For starters, the wheelbase has increased from the previous Kona by two inches, with a six-inch longer overall length and one inch more width. So while it’s still a subcompact crossover, it has more presence in its overall presentation.

The Kona comes with an all-electric version and internal combustion engine options. And for the first time, a hybrid Kona will be available. The Kona N is also back. And Hyundai developed the Kona EV as an EV first. Then it worked from there to incorporate optional gas-powered drivetrains.

What’s new inside the 2024 Hyundai Kona?

Inside, the Hyundai Kona takes on much of the design and details of its Ionic 5 and Ionic 6 brethren. A linear dash devoid of gimmicks mixes with two separate 12.3-inch screens. One is for instruments, with the other offering up infotainment features. Interestingly, the N and hybrid will have their shift lever on the steering column as in the days of old. The obvious advantage is that it frees up the floor of obstructions and visual clutter.

Kona has seen similar sales to Toyota’s Corolla Cross subcompact crossover. Through November, Toyota has sold over 50,000 Corolla Cross crossovers, while the Kona has seen sales of over 70,000 every year since 2019, though sales through November this year have hit only 57,000. Still, it looks to be a more popular subcompact crossover than Toyota’s, which says something.

Beyond this, we still have a lot to learn about the 2024 Kona. Unfortunately, this is all we’re getting for now. The 2023 Chicago Auto Show is a bit more than a month away. For a U.S. debut, it seems the most likely to get our first in-person look. If so, we should be getting more skinny about the Kona soon, so stay tuned.
