On July 17, a Georgia boy was awarded with a Citizen Service Award from the Gordon County Sheriff’s Office after saving his grandfather’s life. Drake Linn, who only just turned 11, climbed into the driver’s seat after his “papa” fainted. The boy said he drove about a mile before pulling the truck, which was towing a boat, over safely.

Linn’s grandfather, Hugh Cox, is diabetic and uses a glucose monitoring device. The device had stopped working, and an insurance snag forced Cox to wait for a new device to be approved. The Independent reported that Cox wasn’t aware of his dangerously low glucose level before going into a diabetic coma. Unfortunately, this happened while driving his truck with his grandson inside.

Linn used his grandpa’s cell phone to call his mother. She helped guide him while he climbed into the left front seat and navigated the truck to the shoulder. Since Linn enjoys driving ATVs and golf carts, he’s somewhat familiar with operating a car.

The call with his mother dropped. While pulling over, Linn carefully tapped the brakes slowly enough to avoid the boat hitting the truck’s rear end. Then, he called 911. Soon after, first responders arrived and Hugh Cox came to within 20 minutes of treatment.

The Gordon County Sheriff’s Office in Calhoun, Georgia, awarded Linn with its Citizen Service Award and four Atlanta Braves tickets.
