Ferrari is recalling virtually its entire production of cars over the last 17 years. A long list of models is being recalled over potential brake failures. The recall involves over 23,000 cars, in what some say is unprecedented. We say we didn’t know Ferrari made that many cars, period. 

Here are the recalled cars:

Why did Ferrari issue the recall?

The potential brake failures have been pegged on the brake fluid reservoir cap. It doesn’t vent like it should, which can cause a vacuum inside the reservoir. So the fix is a new cap and an ECU update. The software update is for an alternative warning if the brake fluid goes below a given level. As drastic as recalling almost your entire production output sounds, the solution seems so banal. But not having brakes is anything but. 

Ferrari claims that only about one percent of the 23,000+ cars will actually need the fix, but you don’t mess around when it comes to brakes. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration filing was on July 26. This is not the first time in recent months that there has been a Ferrari recall over brake issues.

Last November, another recall for North American Ferraris was issued over faulty brakes. It involved almost 10,000 cars including the 2010-2015 458 Italia, 2012-2015 458 Spider, 2014-2015 458 Speciale, 2015 458 Speciale Aperta, and 2016-2019 488 GTB and 488 Spider models. The brake booster and pump assembly were the reason for the recall. It was determined that the issue involved the brake booster and pump assembly. Bosch manufactured both units.

At that time, the NHTSA advised that if the brake fluid light came on to “pull off of the road as soon as it is safe to do so, and then contact Ferrari Roadside Assistance and get towed to the nearest authorized Ferrari dealer.”

In April, another recall involving over 2,200 cars happened in China. It was due to leaking brake fluid, though at the time of the recall Ferrari had yet to determine the reason. This involved the 458 Italia, Speciale, and Spider models built between 2021 and 2019.
