Brand-New 2023 Mazda CX-50 earns IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus Award
Mazda has done it again with the newest SUV in the lineup. The 2023 Mazda CX-50 went through testing with the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and received the Top Safety Pick Plus award for this year. If you are just looking for the 2023 Mazda CX-50 price range, buyers will pay between $27,550 and $42,300.

In case you missed it, the 2023 Mazda CX-50 is fresh off the production line. As modern vehicles do, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) put the SUV through its routine testing. The Mazda CX-50 is an IIHS 2022 Top Safety Pick Plus award winner, the highest award currently offered.
In 2022, the IIHS Top Safety Pick criteria received an update. There are six crashworthiness tests that vehicles have to earn a rating of “good” to qualify. Mazda’s newest SUV received that high score on all of the tests.
Vehicles must get an advanced or superior rating for available front crash prevention, both the vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian evaluations. In addition, acceptable or good scores on the standard headlights.
Headlights had a positive impact on the 2023 Mazda CX-50 SUVs score
The 2023 Mazda CX-50 received high scores in crash avoidance and mitigation. The 2.5 Turbo trim, 2.5 Turbo Premium trim, and the 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus trim have LED projector headlights that earned the SUV a higher score. Both the low beams and high beams offered good visibility for drivers. High-beam assist helped compensate where the headlights fell short.
Many other trim levels, including the 2.5 S Select, Preferred, and Premium trims, also use LED projector lights. However, these aren’t curve-adaptive, which led to a lower score of “acceptable.” Overall, that’s still pretty good for a brand-new SUV.
Criteria for these safety awards have changed dramatically in the last year, which has tripped up some of the usual award winners. Mazda got it right the first time with this 2023 CX-50 SUV.
This new sport utility vehicle is suitable for families
The SUV also receives the highest score in the seat belt reminder category. The reminder was long enough, had a loud enough volume, and offered a suitable initiation time.
The CX-50 received a high score for the child seat attachment (LATCH) hardware for the child seat anchors. Testing confirmed that car seats could be anchored correctly in the back row.
Those interested in buying a safe new vehicle will be pleased with the 2023 Mazda CX-50. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has not yet offered a safety rating but is likely in the testing phase.
