Buick Reveals 2024 Electra E4 SUV Coupe: The Right EV America Won’t Be Getting
This is the just revealed 2024 Buick Electra E4 EV, which isn’t coming to a dealership near you. That’s because it is only for China, where Buick currently finds great success. But is it the better EV SUV that America needs? While Buick has yet to give us the full story on its electric powertrain, here’s what we do know.
Buick is touting the Electra E4 as having its latest technology and the most cabin space in its segment. It is also calling this a coupe, while we clearly see it as a slightly swoopier SUV. Basically, it is a more sporting version of the Electra E5 EV SUV. The E5 is a China-only SUV that is expected to be here next year.
What EV platform does the Electra E4 have?
This is also Buick’s second Ultium EV platform and the second featuring its new Pure Design language. That might mean something internally, but to us means slightly more organic surfaces, less arbitrary sculpturing, and a big indent running through the doors. Obviously, Pure Design is a more economical way of saying this.
The front end is fairly typical but with more dramatic chrome elements that tie the headlight slits with the large grille opening. It’s a more dynamic version of the E5’s fascia, which helps separate the two similar models. The black rockers and chrome trim do a similar service.
At the rear, a full-width LED taillight ties into vents at the ends. The rear features more fussy sculpturing and design elements than the rest of the E4. And the back window has not one, but two spoilers.
What about the Electra E4 range, charging, and performance?
Inside, the overall effect is clean and uncluttered. The dash separates the top and bottom with a slim ambient light trim running the full width. Above the bar is a large 30-inch screen Buick calls “Virtual Cockpit.” This features an EyeMax 6K display.
The large panoramic roof features low-radiation glass for UV protection. Its ambient lighting, sprinkled throughout the cabin, can be set to 121 different colors. A generous assortment of connectivity features is also part of the package.
As we said, there are no specs yet for whether there is a dual-motor option, nor range and horsepower numbers. The Electra E4 will, of course, use GM’s Ultium battery technology and Ultium Drive as well.
So, is the Electra E4 what we’ll get in 2025 or 2026?
Buick says a new EV is coming for the U.S. in 2024, according to GM Authority. The expectation is that it will be similar or almost identical to the Electra E5. So what we may be seeing here is just an American Buick EV that won’t make its way to the U.S. until 2025 or 2026. That gives Buick time to spotlight the 2024 EV SUV for a year or two before it shares company with an E4-like sibling.
So if you like what you’re seeing here, you might not have to live in China in order to have one in your garage. It could be here in another year or two.
