An eight-month-old toddler likely owes a eagle-eyed bus driver her life. And the city of Milwaukee owes the driver a major debt of gratitude.

Driver Irena Ivic was driving her route on a cold December day when she saw something incredible across the road: a toddler running the other way on the highway overpass. The child was barefoot and wearing nothing but a bright red onesie.

Ivic didn’t lose a moment. She slammed her bus into park, opened the door, and ran across the street. Many of her passengers sat in a stunned silence before they began to realize what had just happened.

The driver scooped up the eight-month-old girl and carried her back to the bus. She collapsed into her seat and held the little girl on her lap. She said, “Oh my God. I’m shaking.” She reports that the kid was cold to the touch.

In the bus security footage, you can hear passengers agree with her. Someone calls the police. One woman walks up from the back of the bus and wraps her coat around the toddler. Ivic kisses the child on the head.

Minutes later, the police arrived to help. But the toddler was already comfortable and sleeping soundly on Ivic’s lap.

The city recognized Ivic’s bravery and gave her an award for her quick-thinking, and possibly life-saving, actions. The police were able to reunite the toddler with its distraught family immediately.
