Going Electric? Buy These Years of the Nissan Leaf
Buying an electric car can be stressful, and even the idea sounds expensive — but that doesn’t mean it has to be either of those things. The Nissan Leaf isn’t the newest or most exciting electric vehicle to hit the market, and it may not have the crazy performance of other EV sedans like the Porsche Taycan, but buying a used model year could be one of the most affordable options, even among gasoline-burning competitors. If you’re interested in getting into a Nissan Leaf, these are some of the best-used model years to check out.
The most recent used model
The 2019 model year for the Nissan Leaf is one of the newer models you can find on the used car market, but it’s definitely worth the price. While the 2021 model year might set you back over $30,000, you can get an earlier version of the same generation by buying the 2019, and expect to pay anywhere from around $17,000 to $24,000 on average. It features the same new design that the latest model year does, and most people probably couldn’t tell the difference.
Older and quirkier
Several model years of the previous generation are also great options and even come recommended by websites like Consumer Reports. While the 2015, 2016, and 2017 years of the Leaf look rather awkward, they do have a unique and distinctly electric appearance, and some people may consider them rather charming, if only in an awkward way. You can expect to pay under $10,000 for most of the used models you find on the market, which makes them quite a steal for being just a few years old and still have so much to offer.
The modern Nissan Leaf
If you’re in love with the newest model year of the Leaf, that’s OK too. While it’s only a few months into 2021, the release of 2022 cars will begin at the end of the summer, leaving the potential for another year of the Leaf — and because Nissan hasn’t announced that they are discontinuing the EV, we have no reason to think that there is not going to be another production year. That could mean that waiting until the end of the year can get you into a slightly used 2021 Nissan Leaf.
While the Nissan Leaf might not be the most exciting vehicle on the new or used car market, it is a great vehicle for someone looking to dip their toe into the world of electric vehicles. Whether you want something a bit older or just slightly used, these are some of the best years of the Leaf so far.
