Buyers Go Bonkers for the 2022 Acura NSX, Among the Last of Its Kind
The supercar market is a tough one to enter. But for many years, Acura has succeeded with the NSX. That said, all good things must come to an end, and recently, Acura announced the 2022 model year would be the NSX’s last. But the Acura NSX is going out with a bang, and buyers have been going bonkers over it.
The last of this luxury supercar
Like other cars that have met their demise, the Acura NSX ultimately died because it didn’t sell well. But the NSX has been the automaker’s halo car for years, so it didn’t make sense to kill it without a proper sendoff. So that’s exactly what the luxury automaker is giving the NSX. For the 2022 model year, Acura unveiled the NSX Type S.
The manufacturer will make only about 350 units worldwide, and 300 will go to America. Car and Driver surmises the NSX Type S could start at around $171,000. Though that could be the starting price, it’s likely the car will skyrocket in value. Despite its low sales, the NSX is a beloved car. And thanks to its imminent death and rarity, the 2022 NSX Type S could become a collectible.
A 2022 Acura NSX Type S just sold at auction for over $1 million
Acura was aware of the final NSX’s collectibility and held an auction for the first Type S off the production line. According to duPont Registry, the winner was Rick Hendrick, the owner of Hendrick Motorsports. His winning bid was about $1.1 million, but Acura won’t get that money.
Instead, all proceeds will go to charity. One entity set to receive funding is the Center of Science and Industry (COSI). Hendrick’s winning bid could provide COSI with the funds for over 20,000 educational kits for children.
As for the Type S, Hendrick now has his hands on yet another VIN 001 car. He has a history of winning auctions for such vehicles. For example, Hendrick spent $3 million at an auction last year to get his hands on the first Chevy C8 Corvette, the duPont Registry reports.
An overview of the 2022 Acura NSX Type S
Like other new supercars, such as the Ferrari SF90 and 296 GTB, the Acura NSX Type S is a hybrid. It packs a 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine that works with three electric motors, harnessing about 600 hp, C/D reports. That’s is more powerful than the 2021 NSX, which made about 573 hp. It’s unknown how fast the 2022 NSX can go, but the 2021 model can zip from 0 to 60 mph in about 3.1 seconds.
In addition to the performance upgrade, the NSX Type S will also boast different styling on the front end. And, of course, to distinguish these final NSX models from the rest, Acura will slap Type S badging everywhere.
We don’t know much else about the 2022 Type S as of this writing. However, the new supercar shouldn’t be wildly different from the previous model year in most regards. For example, C/D’s reviewers liked the 2021 model’s interior, so it will probably remain mostly untouched in the 2022 model.
And it’ll probably get decent fuel economy, around 21 mpg combined. That’s great for a supercar as powerful as the Acura NSX Type S.
