An electric scooter is costly, but can save you money

We’ve been touting electric scooters all year, and if you happen to do a little research on them, you’ll know that the prices for them range from anywhere between $200 to up to even $6,000 for the super-fast ones. If anything, you may have thought, “Well, I might as well just keep renting one of those BIRD scooters for my commute.” And considering renting those scooters can cost only around $5 per ride, you’re not wrong.

However, as one story from CNBC reported, those occasional rentals can easily add up to around $20 per week, which would cost more than $1,000 over the course of a year. So if that’s the kind of commuting that you do in order to get around your city, then opting to buy your own electric scooter could be one of the best moves of 2020.

Which scooter should I buy?

There are plenty of scooters on the market that range in price, power levels, and electric range. Just like how you would pick out a car to buy, we would suggest first starting with your price range and see how much of a scooter you can afford. Next, figure out what time of commuting you normally do and where you go. Are there a lot of hills to up, or is your commute mostly flat? Do you need less power and more range? These are important questions to ask yourself when doing your research.

If you need a scooter that’s not too expensive and will get you pretty far on a daily basis, then you can check out the Xiaomi Mi electric scooter, which currently retails for $499. It’s rated to travel up to 15.5 mph and has an 18.6-mile range. It also folds up easily and can be fully charged in about five hours, according to the manufacturer.

But if you want something cheaper, then you can always opt for an electric scooter like the Razor Power  A5 Black Label, which currently retails for $148. However, you can expect to only get around 6.5 miles of range on a single charge and be able to ride up to 10 mph.

Remember to get some accessories with your scooter

If you plan on living the “scooter life,” then you’ll need to invest in a little more than the two-wheeler squealer itself. As such, CNBC recommends that you look into getting the following:

• A helmet: One wrong move and one split-second decision can lead to severe brain damage or even your life. Invest in a helmet, it’s worth it.
• A U-Lock: The U-lock was originally made for bicycles, but it will work well for when you need to hitch up your scooter during your daily errand duties.
• Tile Sticker: In case you do end up losing your scooter, CNBC recommends putting a Tile sticker on it, which is a Bluetooth device that communicates with your phone as acts as a tracking device.
• Phone mount: You can find plenty of phone mounts that are made for bicycles, which will fit on the handlebars of your scooter. Highly recommended if you plan to use your phone’s navigation.

A scooter is pandemic friendly

While the global pandemic could last a while longer, it’s a good idea to get creative with your basic everyday needs, and that includes getting around town. So if you live in a dense urban area, or are used to taking your car short distances to get run your errands, then consider investing in an electric scooter. It could be your best idea yet.
