Can the Ford Mustang Mach-E Actually Use a Tesla Supercharger?
Can the Ford Mustang Mach-E electric crossover use a Tesla Supercharger station to recharge its battery? Recently, a user uploaded a video of a Mach-E owner to YouTube with their crossover plugged into one. Tesla announced it would create universal chargers for any brand’s use. Why does it look like the Tesla Model Y’s rival Mustang Mach-E is using its Supercharger?
Can a Tesla Supercharger charge a Ford Mustang Mach-E?
The short answer is a resounding no. In the video, the charger’s light is not on or blinking; therefore, it is not charging. The person who took the video tried to trick people or look rebellious with opposing brands. Although it does give a glimpse into what it will be like when Tesla finishes its universal charger. Ford is also working on its charger that is projected to be the best available.
If Ford does make an excellent charger or charging station for its EVs, the Mach-E won’t need Tesla. Tesla’s Supercharger stations are the best and fastest working ones available right now. The only other options are third-party locations with no automaker affiliation.
Is Tesla making a universal charger?
According to CNBC, Elon Musk announced that Tesla’s fast-charging stations would open to other electric vehicles sometime in 2021. The Tesla Supercharger network is worldwide, but Elon Musk did not specify the location. Tesla may open its stations one place at a time.
Musk also said that Tesla Supercharger stations don’t work for other brands because there was no standard back then. When Tesla first made these stations, it was the only maker of long-range EVs. With tons of other automakers joining the market, Tesla looks to open its network. Will Tesla make owners of other brands’ EVs, like the Ford Mustang Mach-E, pay to use its Supercharger?
Ford Mustang Mach-E charging stations
There are a few different ways to charge your electric Ford vehicle. Firstly, each Ford EV comes with a Ford Mobile Charger, which plugs into a home wall outlet. While driving, there are 16,000 charging stations across North America. Titled “The BlueOval Charge Network,” Ford says it is constantly growing. The stations feature 150 kW DC fast-charging stations that give the Ford Mustang Mach-E 61 miles range in approximately 10 minutes.
Connecting your Ford vehicle to the FordPass app makes finding the BlueOval Charge Network easier than ever. The app will show owners the best places to stop during a trip, with the least amount of downtime. It’s incredibly beneficial for anyone going on a long-range road trip.
Ford’s charger of the future
Ford is working on making a charging station that will be far better than Teslas. If the charger is capable of what Ford boasts, it’ll be the best EV charger available. The new cable sends a ridiculous 4.6 times the current that the Tesla Supercharger cables do. The issue with producing that much electricity through cable is the size and temperature. Cables of that magnitude would get extremely hot or need to be so thick that no one could plug their car in with one.
However, that’s Ford’s breakthrough technology. The Ford Mustang Mach-E, and other Ford EVs of the future, will eventually use a liquid-cooled cable. The cable is wrapped with liquid running over the wire so that as it heats up, it is immediately cooled down. The same technology can be seen in high-end gaming computers for cooling down hardworking graphics cards.
Can the Ford Mustang Mach-E use a Tesla Supercharger? According to Inside Devs, as of right now, no, it cannot. Shortly, Tesla will make its supercharging network available to all brands. Once Ford establishes more locations for the Blue Oval Charge Network, plus adds its best-in-the-market new charging technology, Ford Mustang Mach-E owners won’t even want to use a Tesla Supercharger.
