The 2020 Toyota GR Supra is the new kid on the block for the luxury sport coupe market. It starts off the 5th generation of the Supra and it’s been long anticipated. Now that it’s out, it’s receiving some mixed reviews. 

MotorTrend got their long-term test vehicle and wrote up their take on how much it lives up to the hype behind it and how well it actually performs. Also, they discuss whether the GR Supra can become a daily driver or not. Here’s what they had to say.

What were MotorTrend’s thoughts on the GR Supra?

With the pandemic, the author of the article wasn’t able to give the Supra the review he usually does. He did, however, review the vehicle with the 300 miles that have been put on it currently. There were no commuter miles logged and no road trips were possible, but he shared the observations based on what he knew about the car so far. 

The first thing he noted was the attention the GR Supra drew. It seemed almost everywhere he went he would have people coming up to ask questions about it. Some people recognized it and asked him if it was a fast car or if he enjoyed driving the vehicle. He likened the experience to celebrity status . . . of the car, of course. 

Overall, he thought the car was just okay. It was certainly quick and handled decently, but he noticed some problems with it. One of the biggest issues he had was with the illumination of the instrument panel. It was too dim, and he had no way of adjusting the brightness. Other issues he had included the rear suspension not performing as it should and the rebound dampening was too sudden. It’s also not as luxurious as you would expect. 

Overview of the 2020 Toyota GR Supra

The model used in the MotorTrend article came with a $56,565 price tag. The base price starts at $54,945. This Supra comes with a 3.0-liter turbo DOHC inline-six engine that puts out 335 hp along with 365 lb-ft of torque. Combined with it is an 8-speed automatic transmission. 

This front-engine model is a two-door hatchback that seats two passengers. It has rear-wheel drive and got an average of 27 mph on the highway according to the tests they performed. 

The Toyota GR Supra has an acceleration time of 3.9 seconds for a 0 to 60 mph run. It also got a braking distance of 106 feet when going from 60 to 0 mph in one stop. 

Can it become a daily driver?

At this time, the Toyota GR Supra wouldn’t make for much of a daily driving vehicle. There are just too many things that need to be addressed before it could reasonably be called a daily driver. The adjustment of the instrument panel lighting would need resolving first. They also would need to address the uncomfortable seating and the tiny storage space.

However, MotorTrend reports that there are several things that Toyota plans to implement for the Supra in their 2021 model. Some of the things they list include the electric power steering, adaptive variable suspension system, and the electronic stability control to name just a few. 

With these changes and possibly getting the dashboard lighting resolved, the GR Supra would be well on its way to becoming a daily driver. It all depends on the impact their changes actually make when the 2021 version comes out. 

As it stands right now, the Toyota GR Supra has a long way to go before we can reasonably use it on the daily. Its future, however, could completely change that.
