Everyone seems to be dunking on the Ford Expedition. They have hot takes about the Chevy Tahoe being better and sometimes bring up the GMC Yukon. However, maybe they’re wrong. Perhaps the 2020 Ford Expedition deserves a chance. 

Can the Ford Expedition compete against rival SUVs? 

One of the main issues with the Ford Expedition seems to be the price. It starts around $52k, which is pretty pricey for a family SUV, but it’s also a JUMBO SUV. Then the 2021 Chevy Tahoe and Toyota Sequoia come in around $49k. So, what makes the Ford Expedition worth paying an extra $3k for? 

Well, for one thing, it does have a slightly better fuel economy than the competition. The 2020 Expedition gets up to 17 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway.

Meanwhile, the Toyota Sequoia gets 13 mpg in the city and 17 mpg on the highway. For an expensive family hauler, the amount you spend on gas for trips, and going to baseball practice makes a difference.  

Ford Expedition performance 

Under the 2020 Ford Expedition hood, you’ll find a 3.5-liter turbocharged V6 engine that pumps out 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. We were surprised to learn that the Expedition doesn’t have a V8, but the beefy V6 engine is supposed to be equivalent. 

The Chevy Tahoe has a standard 5.3-liter V8 engine that pumps out 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque, so the Expedition does start with more power. The Ford Expedition also has the best in class towing with the ability to haul up to 9,300 lb. The Tahoe can tow up to 8,400 lb. 

Also, the Ford Expedition has a faster acceleration. It can go from 0 to 60 mph in 5.9 seconds, while the Tahoe takes 6.5 seconds to reach 60 mph. But does being about half a second faster really make a difference? 

Thanks to continuously controlled damping with an independent front and rear suspension, the 2020 Ford Expedition provides a smooth and peaceful ride. It’s also quiet enough in the cabin for people to hold conversations in each row. 

Ford Expedition features 

The 2020 Ford Expedition has up to 104.6 cubic feet of cargo space, so you can fit various items in there. The GMC Yukon has about 94.7 cubic feet of cargo space, but the Chevy Suburban offers 121.7 cubic feet. 

Some critics suggest that the Ford Expedition has an outdated interior, but MotorTrend disagrees. They feel as if the Ford Expedition has a more luxurious feel and is equipped with a better layout for functionality. 

Plus, the Ford Expedition comes with standard Ford Co-Pilot 360 technology. The safety features include automatic headlights, forward collision prevention, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, etc. However, rival SUVs include an abundance of standard safety features as well. 

So, to answer the original question, yes. The Ford Expedition can compete with rivals. It’s a powerful, comfortable, spacious three-row SUV with the best in class towing and more. Even the redesigned 2021 Chevy Tahoe can’t take down the king.
