The all-new 2024 Ford Mustang Dark Horse has enormous Mach 1-shaped shoes to fill. However, the Dark Horse doesn’t just have previous-generation Mustangs to outshine. No, the Dark Horse has to rival serious, segment-topping sports cars like the 2023 Toyota GR Supra 3.0. So, how does the Dark Horse compare with the six-cylinder Supra in more than just outright acceleration?

The Toyota GR Supra 3.0 has to overcome a triple-digit power deficit to contend with the new Dark Horse

The 2024 Ford Mustang Dark Horse produces 500 horsepower and 418 lb-ft of torque from its 5.0L Coyote V8. As a result, the sinister pony car is the most powerful factory Coyote-powered Mustang ever. Still, at nearly 4,000 lbs, the Dark Horse needs every one of those ponies to overcome its heft.

On the other hand, the Toyota GR Supra 3.0 produces 382 horsepower and 368 lb-ft of torque from its 3.0L turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine. That inline six, an engine it shares with the BMW M240i and Z4, has to overcome a 132-horsepower gulf to contend with the V8-powered pony car. And contend it does.

The new 2024 Ford Mustang Dark Horse is a fitting rival for the Toyota GR Supra 3.0

Regarding acceleration, the new Dark Horse is comparable to the Toyota GR Supra 3.0.

2023 Toyota GR Supra 3.03.9 seconds12.4 seconds

If both cars pack their respective automatic transmissions, the Dark Horse edges out the Supra in the sprint to 60 mph. However, the auto-magic Dark Horse will outrun the Supra 3.0 Auto by nearly half a second in the standing quarter mile. With row-your-own manuals, the Supra overcomes the Dark Horse’s considerable weight and power by 0.1 seconds in the sprint to 60 mph and the quarter mile.

The news changes when the Dark Horse stops from high speeds

Despite the closely comparable acceleration figures, the Mustang Dark Horse shows its athleticism at triple-digit speeds and hard braking.

Toyota GR Supra 3.024.7 seconds6.3 seconds31.1 seconds

In Car and Driver’s 2023 0-to-150-to-0 Speed Test, the Dark Horse accelerates to 150 mph half a second quicker than the Supra 3.0. More impressively, the Dark Horse out-stops the GR Supra 1.1 seconds and 112 feet before the Supra. That might not seem like much, but at 150 mph, things happen seriously quickly.
