While the Nissan Titan has lost its diesel option for 2020, Nissan’s largest pickup truck still has its charms. And, for those looking to go off-road, Nissan offers the Pro-4X model. But can it hold a candle to one of the biggest nameplates in the segment, the Ford F-150 Raptor? YouTube team The Straight Pipes decided to find out.

2020 Nissan Titan Pro-4X vs. Ford F-150 Raptor: features

In terms of powertrain, the 2020 Nissan Titan Pro-4X is at a disadvantage compared to the Ford F-150 Raptor.

For 2020, both the regular and heavy-duty Titan models use the same 5.6-liter V8, rated at 400 hp and 413 lb-ft. Linked to a 9-speed automatic, the four-wheel-drive Pro-4X hits 0-60 in 7.3 seconds, Motor Trend reports.

Meanwhile, the Ford F-150 Raptor has a 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6, rated at 450 hp and 510 lb-ft. With a 10-speed automatic and 4WD, Car and Driver measured 0-60 time at 5.1 seconds. It’s a similar story in ¼-mile testing: Ford’s Raptor finishes in 13.8 seconds, and the Nissan Titan in 15.6.

However, the Titan Pro-4X does claw ahead in braking and handling on pavement. The Titan took 128 ft to stop from 60 mph in MT’s testing. Meanwhile, when MT tested an F-150 Raptor, it needed 140 ft to do the same. And, in MT’s figure-eight test, the Pro-4X took 28.4 seconds to finish, and the Raptor needed 29.2 seconds.

In terms of off-road features, the two trucks are fairly equal. The Nissan Titan Pro-4X comes with Bilstein shocks, LED fog lights and headlights, a skid plate, tow hooks, some blacked-out trim, and General Grabber A/T tires, Autoweek reports. It also has both an electronic-locking rear differential and a limited-slip differential, Truck Trend reports, as well as hill-descent control and hill-start assist.

The Ford F-150 Raptor, though, comes with electronically-adjusting Fox shocks. It also has bead-lock wheels, which help keep the tires in place even if they’re deflated. But the rest of its off-road tech—the differentials, skid plate, tow hooks, and hill-descent control—mimics the Titan’s gear. And both trucks’ 4WD systems come with 2-speed transfer cases.

Nissan Titan Pro-4X vs. Ford F-150 Raptor: driving

For daily-driving, the Nissan Titan Pro-4X and Ford F-150 Raptor offer similar features. Both come standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as automatic emergency braking.

The Titan, though, has blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert as standard; on the Raptor, both are optional. However, MT reports the F-150 has higher-quality interior materials.

Venturing off-road, The Straight Pipes found a lot to like about the Titan Pro-4X. However, compared to the Ford Raptor, the Nissan truck’s suspension leaves something to be desired. Over bumpy sections at speeds, it’s not as composed as the Raptor. MT noted the same in its Pro-4X test. Slowing down, the Nissan Titan does turn into a competent off-roader. But MT reports the Ford Raptor has better steering, allowing for more precision on-road and in the dirt.

Which is the truck to buy?

In short, if you want a truck that can tackle off-road trails in comfort at high speeds, the Ford F-150 Raptor out-shines the Nissan Titan Pro-4X. And there’s an updated version coming for the 2021 model year, Motor1 reports, which may widen the gap even more.

But, the Titan Pro-4X arguably doesn’t compete with the Raptor, The Drive reports, but rather with trucks like the Toyota Tundra TRD Pro and Chevrolet Silverado Trail Boss. Viewed in that light, the Titan is definitely worth your consideration, Truck Trend reports. Plus, as a working truck, the Pro-4X actually bests the Raptor in some categories.

For example, it can tow and haul more than the Ford Raptor, likely due in part to the latter’s suspension. The Raptor can tow up to 8000 pounds, Car and Driver reports, and has a 1200-lb payload capacity. The Titan, meanwhile, can tow up to 9210 pounds and has a 1680-lb payload capacity. And the Nissan Titan XD Pro-4X bumps that up to 10,880 pounds and 2,240 pounds, respectively. Ford doesn’t even offer a heavy-duty Raptor model.

Then there’s the price difference. The 2020 Nissan Titan Pro-4X Crew Cab starts at $49,790; the XD starts at $53,980. The 2020 Ford F-150 Raptor Crew Cab, though, starts at $56,440.

Ultimately, choosing between the two depends on how you’ll be driving. If you’re after a pickup that can send it over tall sand dunes, the Ford Raptor is the better choice. But for work duties or for milder off-roading, the Nissan Titan Pro-4X has a lot to offer.
