According to Ford, customers cannot upgrade from Sync 3 to Sync 4. Unfortunately, this is true across every Ford model and all versions of the infotainment system. Ford says owners cannot upgrade sync with MyFord Touch to Sync 3, Sync 3 to Sync 4, or Sync 4 to Sync 4A. However, if your infotainment system is feeling a little sluggish, there’s one thing you can do.

The automaker says owners can always check to see if their current Sync system operates on the latest version. While Ford does not allow upgrades to a whole new system, it does push out software updates. Owners can visit the support website and enter their VIN to check for available software updates.

While Ford vehicles’ newest and previous infotainment systems are similar, the more recent version isn’t the same. If you’re wondering if you need Sync 4, we have all the differences between the two systems. Firstly, Sync 4 uses twice the computing power of Sync 3. That means it’ll always be faster and more responsive than the previous version. Next, it uses all-new cloud-based connectivity, allowing for conversational voice recognition providing internet search results, perfect for finding the nearest restaurant or EV charging station.

In addition, Sync 4 provides owners with a wireless phone connection. The interface features Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and Sync AppLink when using Bluetooth. Lastly, touchscreen options are completely customizable. On previous versions of the Sync system, owners were stuck with whichever options came on the display. Now, Sync 4 allows you to tailor the screen to your needs, so the most commonly used items are readily available.

What is Ford Sync 4A?

The Sync 4A infotainment system is only available on the Mustang Mach-E and 2021 Edge. It does everything the regular Sync 4 system does, plus a few improvements. According to the automaker, Sync 4A has “subtle evolutionary design cues and user interface options, like Adaptive Dash Card,” that make it stand out on its own. In short, we wouldn’t be too worried about trying to upgrade from Sync 4 to 4A, as the differences are very minimal.

Is Ford Sync 4 a good infotainment system?

Ford’s newest infotainment software is one of the best options in the automotive industry today. Ford stands out from the rest in competition with infotainment systems like Stellantis’ Uconnect, Mercedes’ MBUX, and Kia UVO. There’s no clear number one in infotainment, as many things are personal preference. However, Ford’s option provides customizability, ease-of-use, and an intuitive user interface leaving us without many reasons to complain. Unfortunately, if you’re driving a model with Ford Sync 3, there’s no way to upgrade to Sync 4.
