The Subaru BRZ is a good car and a smart choice for an enthusiastic daily driver. It might not be the most powerful sports car on the market, but the minimalist approach and modern styling give the little Subaru serious charm. The BRZ has a small trunk with just 6.3 cubic feet of storage. However, a small back seat provides extra space for cargo, if not quite enough for two adults to fit comfortably.
However, the little Subaru’s real selling point is its affordability for a driver’s car. The BRZ starts at $29,615, putting it well below sharp joy-of-driving sports coupes like the BMW M2. For that price, you get a peppy 228-horsepower 2.4L four-cylinder Boxer engine and a fun six-speed manual transmission. All of that exuberance comes in a handsome package with available Android Auto and Apple CarPlay on its 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system.
Is a Subaru BRZ a reliable car?
Who doesn’t want a reliable car for their daily driver? According to Consumer Reports, the newest BRZ will likely have average reliability scores. While that may seem daunting, buying a new sports car like a 2023 Subaru BRZ nets you a factory warranty.
TrueCar reports that the 2023 BRZ has a basic warranty length of three years and 36,000 miles. Also, if you’re concerned about your Boxer engine, Subaru offers a five-year, 60,000-mile drivetrain warranty.
Is the BRZ fuel-efficient?
Unfortunately, the 2023 Subaru BRZ isn’t quite as fuel-efficient as a comparable Mazda MX-5 Miata. The little Subaru sports car gets an estimated 20 mpg in the city and 27 mpg at highway speeds. So while it is not quite up to hybrid standards, it’s still more efficient than a new Ford Mustang GT. In comparison, the 2022 Mazda MX-5 Miata gets 26 mpg in the city and an impressive 34 mpg at highway speeds.
According to TrueCar, the Subaru sports car lacks fuel efficiency considering its four-cylinder powerplant. Many other four-cylinder cars get fuel economy figures well above the BRZ’s combined 22 to 25 mpg. However, the automatic transmission bumps those numbers up to 21 mpg city and 30 mpg highway.
Should you daily drive a BRZ?
The Subaru BRZ offers sharp handling, a fun driving experience, and an affordable price tag. Furthermore, the 2022 and 2023 model years feature much more attractive and modern styling than the previous iterations. However, if you want a small sports car to drive daily and don’t care about driver’s car credentials, consider a 2022 Mazda MX-5 Miata.
The higher trim Miatas might be more expensive than the BRZ, but the MX-5 offers an RF model with a removable roof panel and a proper convertible option.
