The 2023 Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer Jeep SUVs will be the first vehicles outfitted with Stellantis’ new I6 “Hurricane” engine. But if you desperately want this Ram-truck-based full-size SUV with a V8, you can choose from one of two V8-equipped trim levels. But if you want the new long-wheelbase Wagoneer “L” with a V8, you’re out of luck. Here are the details.

The Wagoneer will be Stellantis’ first vehicle with the all-new Hurricane I6

After a half-century of service, the beloved HEMI V8’s days are numbered. Stellantis has already engineered its V8 replacement: a 3.0-liter turbocharged I6. The new engine family is called the Hurricane and comes in two power outputs.

The regular Hurricane is engineered to replace the 5.7-liter HEMI V8. This engine makes 22 psi of turbo boost, 420 horsepower, and 468 lb-ft of torque. This engine will power most trim levels of the regular Wagoneer and all trims of the Wagoneer “L.”

The high output Hurricane is branded as the Hurricane “510.” It is engineered to replace the 6.4-liter (392 cubic inches) HEMI V8. This engine boasts 26 psi of turbo boost, 510 horsepower, and 500 lb-ft of torque. The Hurricane 510 will be the standard engine for most trim levels of the Grand Wagoneer and all trim levels of the Grand Wagoneer “L.”

Can you get a 2023 Wagoneer with the 5.7-liter HEMI V8?

If it is important to you to enjoy the rumble of a traditional V8 while driving a 2023 Wagoneer, you’ll be happy to know you can still special order one of these SUVs with the 5.7-liter HEMI V8 from the Ram 1500. But you’ll need to select the base trim of the 2023 Wagoneer and not opt for the longer “L” chassis.

The only Wagoneer with a 5.7-liter HEMI V8 is the absolute base model. The Series II, Series II “Obsidian,” and Series III all come with the 3.0-liter Hurricane I6. In addition, even a base model Wagoneer “L” with its 12 inch longer body comes with the more powerful I6.

Both the 5.7-liter V8 and the 3.0-liter I6 come with the eight-speed “TorqueFlite” automatic transmission. Stellantis predicts that the I6 will be 15% more fuel efficient. Both engine options offer a maximum tow rating of 10,000 pounds.

Can you get a 2023 Grand Wagoneer with the 392 HEMI V8?

The 392 HEMI V8 (6.4 liters) is one of the last old-school muscle car engines Mopar makes. You can order it in a Ram 2500, the Jeep Wrangler 392, or “Scat Pack” Dodges. You can also get the 392 in one Grand Wagoneer: the base trim of the SUV without the extended “L” package.

If you want a Grand Wagoneer with the 6.4-liter HEMI, simply order the base trim–as opposed to the Series II, Series III, or any “L.”

The entry-level Grand Wagoneer is a luxury SUV that will set you back at least $88,640. It features full-time AWD, leather-trimmed seats, and a 10-inch infotainment center.
