Can You Get a BMW X5 Hybrid Cheaper Than a Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe?
You may already know that the Grand Cherokee 4xe is Jeep’s take on a hybrid luxury SUV. But did you know that this American vehicle’s price is comparable to a BMW X5? You’ll pay just over $64k for the cheapest hybrid BMW X5 while you can get into a Grand Cherokee 4xe for $5k less: $59,545. Here’s how the two midsize luxury SUVs stack up.
Is the Jeep Grand Cherokee hybrid a luxury SUV?
According to Edmunds, the MSRP of the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe ranges from $58,465-$75,675. That price point places it firmly in luxury SUV territory, and its advanced plug-in hybrid drivetrain makes it very competitive in the segment.
My colleague Allison Barfield wrote an extensive review of the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe. She found it had “Plenty of luxury comfort.” Standard features include power liftgate, automatic LED headlights, heated steering wheel, and heated seats (which are also eight-way power-adjustable).
The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee features an upscale interior crafted with high-quality, luxurious materials such as leather upholstery, wood grain, and faux suede inserts. You’re surrounded by soft-touch materials.

How many miles does the Jeep hybrid get?
One of the class-leading features of the Grand Cherokee 4xe is its plug-in hybrid capability. Jeep estimates that if you plug your 4xe in for a few hours it will afford you 25 miles of all-electric range before it needs to use its gasoline engine.
The Grand Cherokee 4xe has a turbocharged 2.0-liter I4 gasoline engine and an electric motor/generator. The electric unit is powerful enough to propel the vehicle and gets the electric equivalent of 56 MPG (MPGe).
The 17.3 kWh lithium-ion battery is tucked between the Jeep’s frame rails, waterproof, and armored with skidplates. It adds several hundred pounds to the weight of the SUV, so on gasoline-only mode the Grand Cherokee 4xe is only rated at 23 mpg city/highway combined. We found it got closer to 19, so you’ll want to remember to plug yours in.
Does BMW make a plug-in hybrid?
The X5 was BMW’s first SUV, and its still a favorite of many enthusiasts. The BMW X5 xDrive45e is the X5’s plug-in hybrid version.
While Jeep designed the Grand Cherokee 4xe for luxurious comfort and off-road capabiltiy, BMW engineered the plug-in hybrid version of the X5 for on-road performance. While the Grand Cherokee 4xe only offers a 4-cylinder gasoline engine, the BMW X5 upgrades to a turbocharged 3.0-liter I6. Its hybrid powertrain makes a total of 389 horsepower and 443 lb-ft of torque.
What does all this power mean for the X5 hybrid? It can blast to 60 mph in just 4.7 seconds. It can continue through the quarter-mile in just 13.4 seconds. This makes it one of the quickest plug-in hybrids Car and Driver has ever tested. The same reviewers found the Grand Cherokee 4xe, took 6.8 second seconds to reach 60 mph.
You might think the X5 plug-in must sacrifice range for all this power. But it also trounced the Grand Cherokee in this category, offering 31 miles of all-electric range. It does lag slightly in efficiency, only earning a 46 MPGe rating.
